House Mountain Range with the family

The girls and I decided it was time to get out camping. Even though it was Labor day weekend I was confident I could find us a quiet place to stay. After getting ideas from several of my Utah back country books I decided to check out the West Desert, specifically the House mountain range.

We Headed out early Saturday morning and took a long scenic detour through Fish Lake National forest. I really liked this area and would love to see more of it so its hitting the list of future trip reports. Since we already had a destination in mind we simply drove through it all and continued toward Delta. We took the old Highway 6/50 toward Notch Peak Scenic Byway and started our big loop all the way around the mountain range.

Sinbad Overlook was my favorite part of day 1, its a mind blowing view of the Tule valley sitting at the bottom of shear cliffs raising up to Swasey Peak.

Day 2 we found Hermits Cabin. The cabin was one of my favorite parts of the trip, Its nothing more than stones stacked up like a brick wall enclosing a small cave like hole in the rock.

We continued our journey up and down every open road the range had to offer. Eventually we made our way into Amasa Valley, a beautiful little oasis high in the mountains. It was truly impressive to find big thick trees growning out of a fresh mountain stream surrounded by grass, all while overlooking the barren dry lake bed below.

Notch Peak is the main attraction of the mountain range with its nearly 3,000 ft shear cliff overlooking the dry lake bed below. We weren't able to make the hike this year with my daughter, but there's always hope for next year.

Saturday night while looking for a good place to camp I hit a soft hole in the dirt so hard that it sheared my pitman arm off. Luckily we broke down in a large flat valley with plenty of space to make camp. Having changed the pitman arm before, I knew it was only coming off by cutting it off so I had to go on a long hike in the rain to find cell service and convinced my dad to travel 185 miles to my rescue. The next morning he arrived with a pitman arm generator and grinder, 3 hours of cussing later the job was done. I owe my did big time!!

Looks like a great trip, neat to see those fun little places that are hidden away. Your daughter is too cute, love here picture pose!

Crazy about the pitman arm! Glad you were to get it fixed out on the trail, you owe your Dad big time!

Thanks Greg she really is going to be trouble when she's older!

We didn't bottom out when we hit the hole, my right tire got swallowed up and slammed the truck into a hard turn

This is very interesting, and a little scary. One of the things our kids love the most about back county adventures (not expo trips :) ) is that they get to unbuckle and roam around the cab, or hang out the windows. I imagine that could have ended poorly.

 Cool stuff and good to see. Glad you were able to get the pitman swapped out too. Last one I did I had to cut off as well and man what a PITA that was!

I have one of those too. She's almost getting to that age now though. Scares me...

Great adventure and great pictures! The House Range is amazing. My wife and I plus a BYU professor friend of hers hiked Swasey Peak in 1988. Then about 2000 my wife and I plus our two young sons climbed Notch Peak. The Notch Peak summit makes one just plain dizzy. What views!!

Luckily she was buckled in at the time or else she would have been tossed hard. I usually leave her unbuckled but we were getting into areas that allowed higher speed, hell she thought the bump was awesome!

That's such a cool area, I love it out there. There's a cool history about the hermits cabin. We took our kids out to U-Dig fossils out there a few times when they were younger, that's a fun way to spend a few hours.

Derek, I haven't done any research yet, but could this trip be done in a day? I am thinking I would like to check it out..

I wouldn't recommend it for anything less than one night stay. It takes about 3 hours just to get that far west so you wouldn't get to see much of the range before you had to head home. I think you could easily see the highlights of the trip during one day of exploring not counting the drive home tho. Your girls would love playing in the dirt at U-Dig, you should take them
