How do you tell the difference between D60 and D61

I am looking at buying an 1990 1 ton Dodge. I want the axles off of it. And I was told that that year came with either the Dana 60 or what's called the Dana 61. I was also told the D61 is no good, so how do I tell the difference? They both look the same to me.
Thanks,
Brandon

They came with 61's too, for the higher gears. For what it's worth, you can buy a shim for a 61, to use 60 gears. That is why people don't like 61's. They have a different case offset than 60's.

Well I couldn't find anything in the webbing of the axle. But I did get the number off of the back. These are teh gears I'm assuming it said 43-14 307. I'm assuming that means it has 3.07 gears. So does that mean that the front is the Dana 61 because of the high gears?
Thanks,
Brandon

Yep, it's a 61. 43 teeth on the ring, 14 on the pinion. 43/14 = 3.071428

Well that is good to know, now I need to try and find some more axles. Back to the drawing board.
Thanks,

There have been people running a shim in 61's so they can run dana 60 gears... search on pirate under SanDiego CJ's name.

FWIW, I am running a 61 in the rear of my 4runner, I installed 5.86 gears with 35 spline mosers and welded the diff. You have to get a certain carrier for the 61(I believe it was a 4.10 and higher(numerically lower)ratio and add a shim to it, Randy's R&P carries it, its steel and costs about 45 bucks.) I installed disc brakes on it also for about $150 bucks, it measures 67" wide, its a FF.
