How much water do you use?

I'm just trying to figure out approximately what I'm going to pay for water. It looks like the basic rate includes 20,000 gallons of water per month. That seems like a lot of water, but maybe not. At our last home our water bill was paid by the HOA (freak'n commies...). No HOA this time (wooopeee!), so I'm just trying to plan ahead. So how much water do you use? If you want to include the size of your lot that might be helpful too.

20,000 gallons will fill more tires than you have!!

I live on a .25 acre lot but we water with secondary water. The house water is aprox 3000 gpm.

I think my worst bill was $75. But I was running the water extra for my new sod also. Plus someone left the hose on all night once.........

During the non-lawn-watering months, we use around 3k-4k gallons per month. (used to be a bit less, but there's more washing with a kid around....) From the end of April to the end of May, we used 26K. From end of May to end of June, 51K. Our "basic rate" of just under $30 gives us 6K (and sewer service), then there is an additional charge for each 1K of usage over that.

Our bill was $51 for April-May, and $83 for May-June. You can check with your water company to see how similar usage would compare, cost-wise.

Our lot is .29 acre, and about 9K square feet of lawn.

Your 20K allotment might be for two months at a time, rather than monthly....

my bill doesnt tell me how much water i used, it tells me how many units i used, but i dont know how many gallons are in a unit. in april i used 8 units, last month i used 40 units. thats watering a .25 acre lot 5 minutes a zone twice a day. 16 zones. it cost me 65 bucks or so for water and sewer last month.

One unit = 1000 gallons.

wow that means 40,000 gallons last month, that seems to be alot. maybe its time to start looking for a leak.

Nah, not in the summer. There are plenty of people using double that. (or more) They list how much water you used during the same billing period last year, so you can compare that to see if you're in line. If it's hotter/drier this year than last, it will affect how much you use....

If you do think you have a leak, you can call the water company, they'll send someone out to check for you. (I think they'll just look at the meter to see if the dial is spinning when all your water is off)

Does anyone else pay their bill to Granger-hunter improvement district? The way I read the website was that it was 20k per month, but it was somewhat obfusticated. Can anyone verify?

like Carl said, depending on different circumstances that's not too much. My bill last month I used just a hair over 100K gallons. Our lot is about a half acre and we have many people through our house each week (lots of family :p). The total was about $150 or so (iirc)

i guess i really dont have anything to worry about. i could always go out and watch the meter while all the water is off.

i dont think my bill in tooele was ever over 30 bucks.

we have not been in the house for a year, so they dont show last years usage. i would think they would use the previous owners usage for a reference but thats probably a violation of some privacy law or something.(the water usage confidentiality act of 1973)

You absolutely could, but keep in mind you aren't supposed to do anything with your meter, including even taking the cover off--so if you see a Magna Water truck in the area, act nonchalant. ;)

Hahahahahaa!! You're screwed buddy! (but thank you in advance for paying part of my next raise) Have you seen their new office complex??

My worst bills have been in the $150 range for two months. But then again, most of my lawn has turned to concrete over the years.

That's what mine did for me, because when I moved here they were saying I was using a LOT of water (30k) and my bills were in the low hundred. I honestly don't know where my water goes.... Last month, we (wife and I) used 15k gallons. I water the lawn just enough to keep it alive - barely, and it's still high.

do you remember when the meter readers had to take the cover off to read the meter. my meter has one of those little transmitter thingys on it. so all they have to do is drive past on the little moped thingy and wave the magic wand over the cover to get the reading. they would never know i had the cover off.

I was wondering if the funky electronic thingy I saw whilst snooping under the lid of the neighbor's meter was a wireless transmitter...
