How to: Protect your trailer from theft.

Does it cover anything on or in the trailer if it's enclosed? How is there zero deductible? Do you also have your auto policies with them? This sounds like a great option for my work trailer.
I know it doesnt prevent the theft, but, my trailer is insured through Farm Bureau. $5000, full coverage, 0 deductable, costs me about $2.50 a month. They let me set the value, and that is the amount I get if its stolen.

A Beretta? In *gasp* California? I thought you were supposed to try to smother the thieves with food, shelter, and love.:D

Just because the State is stupid does not mean my son is. Also in reference to the "removable tongue", I used to know a girl like that.

how does a removable tongue work? link to one?

It would need to be custom built for each trailer. Some boat trailers have a folding tongue. The tongue folds back so you can park boat and trailer in a garage. For my trailer, I will build a large receiver which is permanently attached to the trailer. The rest of the tongue will slide into the receiver and be held in place with two large pins. The wiring will need a short extension and plug.

The idea is, to make the trailer unusable to anyone without access the the extension tongue. 18" of receiver will be the only tongue available to would-be thieves. They can't just hook chains to it and drag it without damage to their tow vehicle. Even if they do drag it, they will need serious fabwork to use the trailer.

That's exactly how my boat trailer is set up.

I'd worry about doing it to a heavier trailer like a car-hauler though, usually they have a lot more support all the way up to the hitch, as compared to my lightweight boat trailer.

That's my concern as well. A folding tongue could be an effective theft deterrent, but I am not sure I could build a beefy enough folding assembly for a car hauler. In my farmer-fab head, a receiver type setup would be easier to add beef. Obviously a 2" square receiver would be too small for the his application. I'll build a custom receiver that's about 3"x4".250 wall.

Storing a 3' length of 3"x4" tube shouldn't be too hard, and the shorter tongue would be welcome in my garage.

Sorta like this, but more beefier. View attachment 70447

Yup, just how my boat trailer is set up....except the hitch insert goes in farther, and there is a second pin behind the V part of the trailer frame.

On mine, it's mainly for length issues (for storing inside a garage). If you're going for mostly theft-deterrent, then the new/removable tongue wouldn't have to really extend any farther than into the hitch itself, which would make it much stronger.

This is easy...

Find the guy that stole your trailer. Kill him then put his head on a spear at the end of your driveway. This will warn all other thieves.

need help? There is a big branch in your backyard that we can cut down into a spear...

I figured I just wouldn't park my trailer at your place.;)

Good idea for a thread though... I use a Master Lock coupler-pin lock:

and a Gorilla Lock coupler lock:

Trailer is parked on the side of my house - soon to be behind a fence. I feel lucky to have never had an issue, and my fingers are crossed that my luck continues.

Where is a good place to get these?
Dose state trailer have them?

I just got a trailer and want a good lock setup, Any sugjustion's?
