... use my TV as a monitor for this laptop? Can it be done? TV has RCA plugs on the front, and that's it. Laptop has a screw-in monitor plug, and I guess an S-video port.

I'm Googling but not finding anything germane to my situation. :D

welcome back bad boy...

If you have a vcr or something that can take a s video you can use it to connect your laptop to your tv...
laptop/s video-----s video/vcr vcr/rca or f connector-----rca/f con/tv

or you can go to radio shack or the likes and get an tv modulator (walmart carries them too for $30)

No, the S-vid breakouts out your Chrominance and Luminance... No composite vid. Though, with the right wires in the cable you COULD break out the Luminance and get a B&W image on your TV...

do you have a hdmi input? dvi->hdmi is a strait conversion, no mod/mux. also you can combine the two tip wires (center if they're coaxial) and the two grounds and it will give you an RCA signal. depending on the TV it may be a little fuzz. I've done it in the past.

Buy a newer TV, problem solved. My 2 LG plasma's have monitor ports on them. I'm going to hook my laptop up to my 42" and see what it's like.

Depending on the monitor output (VGA or DVI) and the TV's input, there are lots of adapters out there to do this. But as others have said, you can lose resolution. DVI to HDMI is the best, if you have that capability. You will still need to run audio though, as DVI doesn't carry audio like HDMI does.

There are svid to rca adapters, and if you are talking a plain old tv it's only 640x480 anyway.

I would never buy a TV again without making sure I can pipe my computer into it! I watch a lot of movies on my laptop through my Plasma.

Large scale LCDs look like crap when gaming because of the relatively slow refresh rate compared to their smaller scale PC counterparts.

If you want to game, get a plasma! Better refresh rates, more colors, and with the new pixel shifting technology they have virtually eliminated burn in. It goes against everything you read online but everything you read online does not take into account the new plasma technology.
