HREW, DOM and 4130N

So, I want to build a cage for my FS Blazer. It's a family hauler with mostly trail rides and rock crawling in mind, maybe some blasting around the desert at 40 or 50 mph. Someday, I'd like to do KOH, but that probably isn't going to happen.

What would you build it out of? Trying to look at this from a cost/benefit point of view. I can mig or tig, so that's not an issue.

1.75 x .120 HREW is around $1 - $2 per foot
1.75 x .120 DOM is around $6 per foot
1.75 x .095 4130N chromo is around $9 per foot.

I have even seen HREW as low as 81 cents per foot, if you buy 240 feet or more at a time.

For arguments sake, let's say I need 60 feet. I can get away with .095 wall by using chromoly and save about 25 lbs of weight, but it's a fullsize, so who cares?

Is the cost of DOM really worth it? I can already tell you the cost of chromoly isn't.

You're paying too much for your DOM. Where are you pricing it? Depending on quantity naturally, it should be ~$4. I'm equally surprised at how cheap HREW is, but then I haven't bought any of that recently.

I choose DOM for my personal stuff, with HREW on some less-critical parts. (internal bracing, seat mounts, stuff like that. Anything making the main "outline" of the cage is DOM)

Carl, is right on the DOM price. Call Marmon Keystone or wait until March 2nd. I will be putting in another order after we return from KOH. You can tag onto that order.

In our group buy we did in decemeber the DOM was going for $2.90 a ft if I remember correctly. That was for 10+ sticks. After 10 the price didn't decrease. I agree with Carl using DOM and Hrew on less critical stuff. Anything that has the potential to see a rock in its future gets DOM. It doesn't crush as easy. I have rolled a rig build with HREW a few times and it held up just fine but the tube that hit the rocks had to be replaced after whereas if I'd used DOM I probably wouldn't have.

I just got for pricing on 1.25x.120, 1.50x.120, 1.75x.120 in HREW, DOM 1020, and CDS 4130N. I got pricing from Marmon and EMJ. The pricing is in a pdf if someone wants to post it for me I'll email it to you.

The prices were just something I pulled off the interweb, not from any place local, except the HREW.

MetalMart in Lehi told me they could do HREW 1.75 x .120 for .81 per foot if I bought 500 lbs or more. I calculated that to be just under 240 feet to hit the 500 lb. mark.

For such a heavy pig, I would try and stay with DOM. I went with HREW on my Toy with no bed/doors/ and a few other weight savers.

I still managed to crush- bend - mutilate the cage, on simple flops. Still to this day, I wish I had gone with DOM.

Don't get me wrong, it did hold up, just bent the hell out of it in a few places and will have to be replaced to maintain structural integrity. After seeing how it held up (or lack there of) I would be a little nervous in a full on roll.
