South-West Utah Hunter Canyon, Moab - Anyone have a GPS track or good description?

Seems like Hunter Canyon is becoming more popular and seeing enough traffic that it's turning into a proper challenge. I'd like to check it out, perhaps plan an RME Run in the future up Hunter? Anyone been recently or have any more details? I'd love to find a GPS track for it, if possible. I understand it's in the same canyon as Pritchett, but further out.

This caught my attention. - http://www.fourwheeler.com/moab-exp...ep-safari-trail-report-hunter-canyon-ejs2018/

"Hunter Canyon can be accessed by heading about 13 miles south of Moab on Highway 191, then taking a right turn onto a dirt road that is actually the exit road for Behind the Rocks trail and Pritchett Canyon trail. Continuing down that road about another 13 miles toward the top of Pritchett Canyon you will see a sign pointing you in the direction of Hunter Canyon."

Then the FFFFR (Friday Flat Fender Fun Run) was out there a couple of days ago and from the pics I saw, it was a massive struggle.

I know Brennan has a track for it.

Isn't hunter canyon the "exit" road for behind the rocks? if you have gone up pritchett and are heading out to 191, hunter canyon is the left turn that goes towards behind the rocks?

We always run Hunter Canyon (in reverse, I guess) when we come out of Pritchett. It takes us back to Behind the Rocks, which we then run in reverse to get back to 191 rather than taking the long, bumpy dirt road. I've always liked Hunter Canyon and it has certainly gotten rougher over the years.

This post doesn't really help with location or description. If you can get to the base of White Knuckle and continue in a N/NE direction instead of S/SW , like you would after getting down white Knuckle, you'll be on it. I think it's mapped in the Charles Wells - Moab Trails book.

I'll look at the Wells book, have one in the Jeep!

I have always loved doing Pritchett, Hunter Canyon, and Behind The Rocks backwards. Hunter is fun for sure.

Way, way back in the day a friend and I were looking for old abandoned roads down that way. We started up Hunter Canyon by Pritchett Arch and drove up it as far as we could. Looked to have led to some drill holes. About half way up I found a road exiting the canyon to the south. It led to the bottom of White Knuckle Hill. A year or two later he showed it some Red Rock 4wheelers and they added it to the Behind the Rocks trail for the Safari. I don't know if they still use it or not. It was getting tore up last time I was on it (late 80's I think). Haven't been back since.

@Herzog and I were able to meet up and check out Hunter Canyon yesterday, we staged at the start of Behind the Rocks Road, across Hwy 191 across from the turnoff for Area BFE. We went in on BTR Road, deciding even though that route is longer it would probably be faster. The road was decent, but had plenty of rough spots along the way, with a handful of challenging ledges tossed in. I didn't time the route in, but I believe it took us about an hour and 15 min or so... and we were running at a pretty quick pace.

Eventually we ended at a 3 way intersection, one route coming out of Pritchett, the BTR Road we came in on (most often used to get out of Pritchett) and the less traveled Hunter Canyon route.

We headed in and it was obvious that Hunter doesn't see much travel. The trail runs thru the bottom of a small, tight canyon with a lot of tamarisk and plenty of other green brush & trees. Winding thru the canyon was awesome, there was a decent bit of water in places as well, but Moab has had some recent storms. Much of the trail was bombing in & out of the wash, then at times running up the wash itself for a ways. There was a lot of sandy two track and the wash itself had a mix of sand & small river rock.

The first real challenge was climbing out of the bottom of the wash, up to a small overhang. It wasn't a crazy climb, just tight with the overgrowth and the overhang.

The next obstacle was a rolling slickrock climb with pretty steep transitions. There was water & mud on the approach. I opted for the easier route around it, but Herzog took the more challenging route and walked right up it.

We bombed up the trail and came to a tight right hand turn, with a large ledge climbing out of the wash. Again, the buggy cruised right up, while the Gladiator needed some spotting & line selection. At this point, we had started our climb up onto the mesa. The fun, tight little canyon section of Hunter was over all too soon. As we continued on, there were a few more small climbs, then a massive one. The main route climbed up a good 30', with 3 massive ledges and several large boulders. The buggy cruised right up, but there was no way the Gladiator was going to make it without serious damage and a ton of work. There was another route option that wandered around to the right, so I went to check it out. My best option was a steep climb with a tree blocking the easiest approach to the hill, about 30' up and a small ledge at the top of it. I made it, but it wasn't pretty.

At this point, we ran across a group of dirtbikes and then a dozen or more SxS's.... we hadn't seen anyone since the Pritchett intersection. We were back to the well traveled trails of Moab and all the crowds. :(

We picked up the Behind the Rocks trail and started working our way back to the start. Once we reached White Knuckle Hill, we had to split up.... it's GNARLY and steep! @Herzog walked right up it, but as big as the ledge was I wasn't making it up. The bypass took me miles out of the way, we eventually met back up on Behind the Rocks Road and headed back.

I will say this about Hunter Canyon.... its neat, the trail reminds me of Moab from the mid 90's. But I don't think the Juice is worth the Squeeze, IF you only want to see Hunter Canyon. Shane and I talked about it and I believe we decided that the best way to run Hunter is by running Pritchett, IF you can buzz thru it quickly and have time in the day to take both Hunter and Behind the Rocks out.

Thanks for sharing your trip. That is how we run it. Depending on the group, we usually have lunch at the top of Yellow Hill, coming out of Pritchett, then on to Hunter and out Behind the Rocks. I like to minimize the time spent on that bumpy county road.

That sounds like the best way to do it, I agree with you about bypassing the road out. And there are enough challenges to in Hunter Canyon and the rest of Behind the Rocks to keep you entertained on the way out, after you've ran Pritchett.

I need to get the TJ done so I can make that trip! ;) Sounds like the right tool for the job.

I took some footage of our trip yesterday, but feel like I failed.... I didn't get the GoPro or Drone out to film Hunter Canyon, which I really wanted to do. :( All of my footage was from my phone, with most of it being from in the cab of the Gladiator. Here's what I got, it's OK... could have been better though.

Pritchett to Hunter canyon and then BTR is definitely the right way. IF I don’t feel like just driving back down Pritchett. It depends on the day.

Looks like you guys had fun and you succeeded at making me jealous once again!

Yeah, going back down Pritchett seems like the best, usual option. But if you're up for more, Hunter & BTR makes getting out from Pritchett more exciting.

It was short and sweet once we got to it and went through it but I'd never been on it and so that was fun. Greg is right, it didn't see as traveled as the other trails.

Looks like fun. I’ve always thought that hunter canyon was part of behind the rocks. Every time I’ve done it, I’ve gone out that way.

I've ran Pritchett many times over the years and have never gone thru Hunter canyon! I didn't realize it was an option and I'd be willing to bet that most people that run Pritchett have done the same thing.
