Spoken like someone with no kids and a pretty stupid generalization. The kid was breaking the law driving with a permit and with a friend. Some parents don't lay down the law or do a good job of teaching. All my kids spent a lot of time driving my rigs in the mountains, with me, before I ever let them on the road. They have all been good drivers. One more to go, knock on wood.

I speak from experience of having almost been killed by little children regularly.

When I'm on the motorcycle and I see a car full of those children with a child at the wheel, I might as well pull over and take up the fetal position because they always try to kill me. Generalizations are generalizations because they are usually true. Just because you are a good parent doesn't mean hardly anyone else is.

Good for you. Defensive driving on a motorcycle is best in any and all situations. Good luck staying alive. BTW, did you come by this epiphany when you finally reached 21 and were just getting your first license or when?

Might as well make it 25 years old as the accident rate for a 16-20 year old is nearly even with the 21-24 year old rate. Accounting for nearly 70% of all accidents

EDIT: While the accident trend drops noticibly from 16 to 25, it doesn't flatten out until 34 years old, in which it stays pretty flat until 75+ in which the chart I was looking at stops. The

Realistically the worst drivers by any comparison are 16 year olds. But move the age to 18 and the worst drivers will be 18, 21 and I beleive they will be 21. Will the curve just shift or will it actually drop? I think both, but it will primarily shift. While alot of maturing happens between 16 and 21, stats show that currently a 21 year old is only ~40% less likely to be in a wreck than a 16 year old. Start drivers out at 21 and I'd bet that number would be pretty close to even.

EDIT 2: Another interesting point, a 16 year old female is less likely to cause an accident than a 24 year old male. Mabey men just shouldn't get a license until 25 :D

These numbers have less to do with age than experience. If you raise the age then the #'s will go with it (for the most part-age does have some effect)

PBandCJ, sucks your Jeep is a goner. Start gathering receipts and finding high priced comparable for sale locally and online. Take copies of ads, etc to the adjuster assuming they try and low ball you.

I understand the statistics and I'm trying to not end up one of them. I see the faces of the people that try to kill me and I see a lot of children behind the wheel. I have had adults try to kill me but the percentages are way lower than the kiddies.

The real problem we have is that our driver's education is a JOKE. We pop the kids through some basic crap and turn em loose with parents that don't care and then people like you and me pay the price with high insurance premiums across the board and higher taxes to pay for the EMS that comes to save the day.

The only reason I am still alive is because I am a better driver than the people that try to kill me through their ineptitude. Failure to learn how to properly operate a motor vehicle is a big problem in this country. Bart I appreciate you taking the time with your kids to teach them but you cannot discount my personal experience.

Kurt..I'm 29 so I am all for raising the driving age to 25 ;)

All people that work in/about/around an oil field are toothless rednecks who lack social skills, self awareness, and think one day Bobby Johny from chevy car 121 will enjoy a fine hungry man with them in what they consider to be a particularly modern double wide.

generalizations are fun. I entertain myself with them all day.

I wonder what the #s will look like in a few years with the cost of fuel, I think the 16-21 group of kids will have a tough time paying for fuel therefore driving way less. Also I agree with a 21 age limit for a license and 25 is even better IMO. In Utah you are living on borrowed time driving a motor bike. I have lived here since 94 and have been rearended 3 times just sitin at a light in traffic all were while driving my truck.
