Hybrid turbo and boost management Q's???

My wifes truck (01 Cummins SO with auto trans) ate a turbo the other day, and I ended up getting a replacement HX35 Hybrid with an aftermarket boost elbo. This turbo should see around 35+ lbs of boost at full spool. The truck is bone stock and the computer will trigger an overboost code at anything over 20psi and put the truck in limp mode.

I deal with this I am considering two options. First would be to get a boost fooler (alters message to computer so I won't get a code) for $65 and pod guages for boost, pyro, and trans temp for about $300.

Second option would be to buy an Edge Juice with attitude and get all those things plus the 5 stage chip. $600+

I can't decide what to do. I love the power the truck has already and don't want to open a can of worms, but the chips have a lot of nice features. I have stock fuel delivery and transmission so the chip would have to stay on economy or a low setting at least... Am I headed in the right direction? What would you do or recomend? Thanks,

Andrew

I also have the HT hx35/40 with a banks 14cm exhaust housing on a 02 6sdp Dodge. When I had the edge I would see around 33 max boost and 24-25 without it but I don't go into limp mode it just hits a wall on the boost, limp mode must be an auto thing. I have read the boost fooler is a waste of money. Have you thought about a smarty? Oh yeah the hybrid turbo is awsome.

 My real goal with the Edge chip is to have the monitor. I need a boost and pyro and the juice comes with that plus a ton of other features including a fooler so I don't have to worry about over boost. I've heard nothing but good things about the Smarty but I think I'd save a ton of cash going the other route...

I guess I'll bolt up the turbo and see if I can set a code. If I don't then I'll just go with a three pillar guage set and call it good. After replacing every moving part in the front axle and buying a hybrid turbo I just don't want to put any more cash into it--expecially with an automatic and the imfamous 53 block :ugh:

Meat and I have discussed this before and my opinion can be read in the see my tow rig post. Basically I sold my edge juice w/tude, & installed a pyro & boost gauge in the a-pilar and I have no chip. I do have the rv275 injectors and that seems to be good enough for me, plus I don't beat the heck out of my truck anymore.

What are you doing with the stock hy35?

 I installed the turbo this morning and it has a whole different animal in a good way. I'm building boost at a much lower rpm (which is wierd cosidering the HY had such a smaller housing ) and it has cleared up a ton of smoke. I have not triggered a code yet so that's good. I don't think I gained much power if any though my guess is the restricted exhaust or I'm not pushing enough fuel...

Anyway I'd like to get a 2 pillar for boost and pyro, and then do a 2 guage pod on the dash for trans temp and fuel pressure in the long run. I like the features of the chip, but I really don't need any more power and it hard to say if my fuel mileage would really increase enough to justify it.

Anyway I'm taking a break from replacing the balljoints--and everything else that moves under there --and all I can say is WOW :ugh: I cannot believe a job being so strait forward and involving so little could take so much effort and hair pulling...

I have had a huge amount of interest in that HY turbo. I was under the impression that they aren't really that great, but I don't really know why. That being said I was planning on keeping it around and rebuilding it eventually to try out on the 92 to replace the "king of lag H1C". I'll let you know if things change though ;)

If you put a faas on you won't need a fp gauge, I just check mine every now and again, usually before a hwy trip with a hand held manual gauge I bought from geno's garage.

Yeah the little hy might be pretty cool on my first gen or my 4bt, but I may have sold my 4bt and I also have a hx35 off of a 97 Dodge with 50k for my first gen.

The smoke that you cleared up was probably oil burning off inside the turbo as it was going out.

What do I do when I "Explode" my suncoast Transmission?
I just fried my suncoast last week for the 5th time.

 the question is what are you doing to explode a Suncoast transmission? And what have they done as far as modifications? They offer stock replacements, full billit and everything in between....

I have seen automatics go through hell in sled pulls, and if built right and kept cool they can hold up under incredible amounts of strain :)

Anyhoo the 5600's are cool if they came in the truck, but they about the same OD ratio as the NV4500. For swapping out an auto I'd factor in replacement parts availibility, not needing a different engine backing plate, initial cost and all out strength I'd go with the 4500''s 5 gears--with the 5th gear nut modification that is :-\
