I have a 1987 jeep wrangler with a 4.2L carb motor it is sick the motor is slowly dying (compression). I have aquired a 1989 4.0L out of a XJ I have got the engine wire harness and the ecu for a 5 spd tranny.I have in the 87 wrangler a Peugeot 5 speed tranny that I would love to get rid of an dput a better tranny in but that comes later first motor. Lets get to my question I need to put a crank sensor in the unit will the bell housing for a electronic controlled motor bolt that has the crank hole allready in it bolt up to my tranny and what flywheel do I have to use I need one that has the trigger for the sensor in the bell housing. Does any one have and input or ideas os suggestions I could not find any place on the internet that went through what I am doing all have been newer motors newer jeeps. any suggestion would be helpful before I start Thanks

I think you could swap everything (engine, bellhousing, trans (maybe keep the YJ tcase?---may or may not be advantageous depending on your vacuum situation on either vehicle for the front axle----Personally, I'd try to get rid of that crap, but for simplicity would swap and work on getting rid of the vacuum junk) from the donor XJ to the YJ and be fine.

Go to cjoffroad.com they have a complete forum discussing the 4.0 swap. That is where I got a lot of the information I needed to do my 4.0 swap. You can buy a crank position sensor relocation kit and move the sensor to the front of the motor. Too bad I sold the newer 4.0 bell housing I had.

I would take mbrysons advice and find an auto that was bolted to a 4.0 if not the one that was out of the XJ. I swaped my 4.0/43re/231, harness and all out of a Grand cherokee, likely cheaper and easier than buying adapters. but there is at least the adapter option otherwise.
