The more I drove the more I got used to it. I got pretty decent at getting it really close to center just by feeling the back end move around. I think a return to center would be a smart thing to have but not a necesity at all.

I honestly dont know if I will end up doing one or not.

Some more bad news though. My new motor lost oil pressure! I thought the gauge must have broke but I opened up the oil filler and looked in. Sure enough no oil. I pulled the pump off yesterday and had it warrantied since it has like 5 hours on it but I didnt get it all put back together yesterday.

I cant believe we had to pull the oil pan again. I thought for sure I was done with that for awhile...............thats what I get for thinking

I don't suppose you bought a re-built one from some place like Autozone, Pep Boys, or Checker did you? If you did that is where you went wrong. I suspect that you will continue to have problems with the pump. Just my experience. If there is a part you are going to depend on then you should always get a good quality, new part. I hope it all works out for you.

17 days in Moab

Here are a few pictures of Cheston's Scout and the other TTC folks on Hell's Revenge. We got lucky and fell in behind them - got some great action.

Bec and I took the '49 Power Wagon on the Hole in the Rock Trail. It hauled most of the camp gear for the family members - 4 vehicles in all.

Thanks for the kind words

A few pictures of the group we ran with most of the 17 days we spent in Moab.

Shane Johansen doing Hell's Gate in reverse with an open front diff - he made it!

Shane Johansen doing the Escalator in reverse with an open front diff - he made that one too!

Most of the mob on top of Phobia Hill on the Eagle's Dare Loop. One of the Four Runners broke a Birfield on top of this hill, the other Four Runner broke a Birfield going down the other side and locked up a front tire for a ways - he nearly slid off the steep side but saved it.

Believe it or not I am being plagued with more motor problems.

For those of you that were with me on Behind the Rocks.....remember when I said it sounded like its running on 7 cylinders?

THATS BECAUSE IT WAS!!!! I broke an exhaust push rod on cylinder #1 This also caused a backfire and knocked the rocker off of the intake vavle so it wasnt even trying.

It ran pretty good on 7 if I do say so myself. I was worried that the backfire might have blown a hole in a piston or blown off the rings but it is still showing compression so I think Im ok.

The pushrods are one of the very few things I didnt replace with the new motor so I will have to order up a new set.

I am so close to scrapping this pig out and just wheeling the XJ. Im really sick of messing with motors.

I still havent had time to pull off the Black Box underdrive to see whats going on with it as well.

Stupid scout

While teaching some of my troops I have found that people want to start giving up after they are two thirds of the way through a problem. You, my friend, are a little more than the two thirds through this problem. Just take a step back, relax, it is not going anywhere (especially with that Ford motor in it) and focus on the problem at hand. Sorry I could not resist that Ford interjection. It is not that bad. Just stay focused.

I agree, i tried to give up on my toyota a few times, but I had told the wife not to let me give up on it early on.

Well she didnt let me give up, and its wheelable.

Well I have been doing a little research and I think I know the problem.

With my new fancy roller tip rocker arms I was forced to run guide plates as well. After looking at several sets of pushrods....some are rated for use with guide plates, some are not. My guess is that mine are original from Ford which would mean they are not rated for guideplates.

The guideplates wore through the sides of the pushrod til it got so thin that it collapsed under the strain. After looking at all the pushrods, most are worn a bit.

So I guess its my own dang fault I was a cheap a$$ and didnt want to fork out any more money than I had to. I probably should have just went with stock replacement rockers but thats no fun right?

The cool thing is Im almost positive the motor backfired on Hells Revenge the day before we went to Behind the Rocks. Which means I wheeled a ton on only 7 cylinders and stil had plenty of power to do anything I wanted.

My wife informed me that I will not be giving up on the Scout. To much time spent away from her and to much money into it. I said sometimes you just have to take your losses and get out while you stil can but.....I guess its just going to sit there awhile.

I cant decide if I should take it to TTC this year with me. It would be cool to have it there and if its running I could wheel on friday which would rule. Hauling it down there tho is not cheap. Easily double my fuel bill. I guess I will see if I get it fixed before hand or not. That will help me decide I guess.

If only 9 show up again this year I would make them let Char and Cecila (mine and Corey's wifes) compete with it for the #10 spot. That would rule!

I think that I have said it here before but, if I have not then here it is. "If you don't have the time (or money) to do it right the first time then when will you have the time (or money) to do it again." Everybody had done exactly what you have done and, hopefully, we learn from our mistakes and pickup the pieces and move on. That is life. Let me rephrase that, this is the life, the life we all enjoy. F-O-U-R-W-H-E-E-L-I-N-G!! So, wipe the blood trickle from you nose and get it fixed.

You know what would really be cool, is if Char and Cecila (sp) were able to do that and just took it to all the boys that were there competing. But, I am not too sure that your vehicle would qualify for this idea. Don't you have to show up in a different rig altogether? Or could it just be a driver / co-driver change?
