Since my summer wheelin extravaganza has been cancelled, I have some time off in september. I have about 7-10 days I can take and was thinking of doing something I've never done before and wouldn't have a chance to do again. My initial thought was to do a road trip into Baja Mexico---see how far down the baja we can get until I have to turn around. I figure a day to socal, a day return. We could get 3-4 days into mexico before having to turn back. Would be quite the adventure I think.

I was also thinking of possibly driving to Seatle/portland and either driving north up the PCH or south for a week and then heading back. Just camping along the way and doing whatever.

What do you think? Anybody know of people that have done the baja trip--how safe/unsafe is that. I've never really feared for my safety anytime I've been in mexico, but i'm concerned about camping out in the middle of nowhere and also communication issues. I don't speak much spanish--how well do the locals down that way speak english?

any other ideas for a cool road trip?

I'd go to Jackson/Yellowstone, then head west all the way to the coast and head south until you decide to turn left and come back home....

Our best trip have been the leasted planned. Just go and play it as you go....

I love coming down the PCH...a road trip I was planning a while back was jsut that, stop in sasquatch(sp?) country in northern california, redwoods, etc...we were talking about flying (we had access to a plane at the time so we could fly up there for free) to seattle and taking 10 days or so and make our way back to SLC headign down the coast.

We also talking about doing Glacier National Park and screwing around up that way.

You can get by with English in most of Baja... it's practically the 51st state. (Lot's of retired white people down there.) Most people you deal with for purchases speak broken english... the Mexican Military checkpoints can be a little intimidating, but have some cold sodas (or a cute girl... ) & they'll be nice to you. The check points are kinda random, I think we passed thru 3 last time we went to San Felipe. It will still be a bit warm in Sept, but it'll be cooling down. It would be a blast to drive to Cabo, but that's a LONG trek.

Catherine speaks some Spanish... and we have access to a place on the beach in San Felipe. But Sept. is going to be a busy month for us.

Yeah, I kinda want to do one of those trips you only get a handful of chances to do in your life. I've been through yellowstone and the surrounding area a dozen times, I've been up through Glaciar, although I would like to head up into Calgar/Banff and north from there. That would be cool. I tried to do the PCH a couple years ago and realized after 10 hours of driving that it would take a full week to drive it all. Well, I have a full week.......

I've just always wanted to drive through mexico for some reason. It would probably take 2 weeks to do Cabo don't you think? What good resort towns are there 300-500 miles into baja? Anything worth shootin for?

When I get home tonight I need to dig up some maps and see whats up.
