ive been doin some research and was looking at the various birfield eliminator kits out there.
sky-manufacturing.com
marlincrawler.com
redlineoffroad.com
and there was a bunch more.
anyways the price ranged from 530-730.
just wondering if this would be a better route to go over getting the longfield kit for about the same price?
which is stronger? :)

Longs... I broke a handful of stockers, went with the longs and have been great since (knock on wood).

At some point you need a "fuse" in your axle... I would rather break an inner axle (cheap and easy to swap) than a weak 8" pinion... Get the chromo outers and be done...

I'd buy Longfields any day over a birf eliminator. Longs aren't that expensive. There's something to be said about keeping your axles so stock replacement parts work for them. Also, aren't the birf eliminator kits just stock strenght shafts & u-joints? If that's the case you're gaining strenght with the Long over stock u-joints.

so your saying keep the stock shafts and i cant remember what spline is stock but get the chromo 27 or 30 spline birfs?
and what is a "fuse"?

No,you might as well run stock birf's.Do it right and buy some long's,well worth the money with no worry's;)

27 spline longs or the 27 spline um-06's from marlin both run about $200 each and are identical to the 30 splines other than the inner axle.

so should i run stock shafts with longs birfs?????

Works for most people! The birf is the weak point, get Longs and the axles will be the next week link, but for most wheelin I doubt you'll break any axles.

What size tires you running?

Just find a spare inner for each side and take them with you just in case you break an inner with the long's.
You can also send your stock birf's to bobby and he will treat them, they are not as strong as the chromo's but alot stronger than stock's.I think it it's $65 a birf......

Besides redline offroad doesn't exist any more, their eliminator kit design was bought by randys ring and pinion.

I didn't mean to do that!

First off..... Tire size? Gearing? Motor? Driving style? I had a welded front with 5.29's, dual transfers, 36's, and a dent in the floor from the gas pedal.

Seems like everytime I turned the key in the thing, I was breaking birfs.

Took a step back and looked at my driving habits, and added a selectable locker. Haven't had a problem since, on stock birfs and inners.

Edit: On a side note, I ran with one hub unlocked on the front. All of my breakage was on the unlocked side when I actually locked it in for use.

I just put in a set of 30 spline longs, complete with the chromoly inner axles. From what I've read it looks like the hubs will probably be your weak link (fuse), and then your ring and pinion after that...assuming that you're not running Genuine Gears. For me, I would rather break a hub than an inner axle. Maybe there's a chance that I'll grenade a ring and pinion, I guess time will tell. It didn't look to me like the various birfield eliminator kits really provided much in added strength over stock birfs - certainly no where near as strong as the longfields.

Cheapest would be to go with the 27-spline longs and keep your stock inners-just plan on carrying spares and needing to change them out at some point. For me I wanted to put something in there that I could forget about having to carry spares, worry about breaking, etc.

I just finished installing some 30 spline longfields this weekend. If you go to their website (toyotasuperaxles.com) there is a chart showing torque test results and the new 30 spline longfields are as strong as a 35 spline dana 60. When I was trying to decide what would work best for me I called Bobby Long and asked what he would recommend. When I told him I was running 37 inch creepy crawlers he highly recommended going with the 30 spline. He said if I was running anything smaller than that the 27 spline would probably be ok. Like Greg already mentioned you are always going to have a weak point. If you just upgrade the birfs the inner axles will probably be the next thing to break. If you go to cro-mo inners your next weak link will probably be ring/pinion or hubs. I guess you just have to pick your battle. I personally didn't want to run the birfield eliminator because dana 44 u-joints aren't really much of a strength increase for the price.
