I am in the process of converting a non HO 5.0 motor to HO. I have the cam installed and and install the timing chain set, but i have a question on the marks. I want to installing it advanced +4 ddegrees to try and get some extra low end power. Im confused on which marks to line up now. Do i line up the 2 0 marks still? Or do i line up the +4 on the crank gear with the 0 on the Cam gear? Please noone tell me about how converting a non HO to an HO im going to have to switch to a roller cam setup and my firing order is diferent and such. My motor is already a roller motor. I know the firing orders diferent. I tried asking this same question on POR and somehow it got turned around about people telling me im going to have to change over to a roller set up and nothing they said had to do with my question.

I want to run some Roller rockers as well. Does anyone see a problem with going to 1.72 or should i stick with 1.6? Thanks guys.

Hey! That was partly me! :) So anyway, if you want 4 degrees advance on the cam, line up the cam with the +4 mark. There's one mark on the cam and several marks on the crank gear I'm assuming? Should be pretty straight forward. And going with 1.72 ratio rockers is most likely not going to be a problem unless you've got high rise pistons. And if you have the shorter 302 valve covers that could be an issue. Is there a specific reason you want to go with 1.72 ratio rockers? Because you won't notice any increase in torque, only increase in horsepower at high rpms. All your torque will come from your cam duration. But since they usually don't cost any more, why not.

But tell me cuz I'm confused, you say your motor is non HO, but is a roller motor. Was it converted? Or did Ford make a roller 302 other than HO's?

I thought 4x4s wanted cams with low duration and more lift, where as high HP motors want lots of duration and more lift. So putting 1.72s in would trick the motor into thinking i had a cam with more lift but same duration.
All 302 motors built after 85 i think were roller motors. Only the Mustangs however got the HO name because they had higher compression and a bumpier cam and the firing order was the 351 firing order, whereas the no HO is still the old 302 firing order. 351W motors werent rollers unless you had a lightning, and thats only in the 94 and up engines. Check in Summit racing or Jegs on the cam selection, theres a split between 85 and earlier and 86 and up because all newere motors are roller.

I put higher ratio lifters in my 350 chevy 1.6 in place if the stock 1.5s. definite improvment in the low and mid range. I read up on it before doing it and I also understood that it was good for power down low (yes more lift same duration and the valves will open and close quicker). No drawbacks unless you have a special big cam that is already perfect for what kind of power you are trying to make. For the money I can't think of a better power mod if they are available for your head and you are going to run a stock or mild cam.
