Can a 2-stroke diesel even run without some type of forced induction? I thought it was mandatory.

Those old Detroit 2 strokes are pretty neat--EXTREMELY LOUD though. Combine that with an FJ40 and your going to need ear plugs without question lol

They will not run without a supercharger. A lot of those had a turbocharger along with the supercharger and they turn some pretty high RPMs at redline. Very unique engine design.

I've spent hundreds of hours running a machine with a Detroit 8-71 that was turbo & supercharged... the noise it made at full throttle was INSANE! Ear plugs weren't always enough...

Earplugs and earmuffs, and it was still loud. Same engine. Crazy loud.

seeing that the intake manifold goes down instead of up I would say there is probably a turbo under there somewhere... and look at the size of the intake...

I was guessing that was the exhaust side... Looks like a pyrometer probe mounted in it to me.

Supercharger is gear driven, and semi-internally mounted. From the outside it's just a cover on the side of the block that you'll see. 50's Detroit in a 60's Toyota, nothing awesome about this.

On one hand they are very reliable and will bolt up to nearly any transmission, hydraulic pump, generator, water pump etc. under the sun. On the other hand they are stupid loud (again stupid loud) and didn't really put out the power you'd expect from a supercharged/turbocharged diesel. I've seen a few swapped into farm trucks. Rumor has it you could get the 4-53 as a very rare option in Dodges and GMC pickups sometime during the 60's but I've never been able to confirm it. I did have a scan of an advertisement for the Dodge--which I can't find to save my life :-\ EDIT: My bad it was a Perkins diesel available in the 60's Dodge pickups not the Detroit Diesel.

The first engine I ever rebuilt was a 3-53. Brings back memories---going from a crank lying on a workbench to WOT on the dyno was a pretty cool experience for a high school student I must say.

24V-71 anybody?! :ugh:
