Manbearpig will come to the rescue and warm our globe to prevent the ice age.

Magnetic shifts have been occurring for a REALLY long time, as evidenced in the rock record. I would like one to come because it would be cool. I don't think it will spell destruction. Evidence linking magnetic shift to any mass extinction event is marginal. although, there is some correlation.

Hmmm.....lets ask the cornbread.:)

Although they never directly implicate this type of cyclical astronomical phenomenon in this article, this cycle has been a major player in many of Earth's geologic events. There is no doubt that we will see the effects of these major processes, however I don't believe they will end humanity. I believe Yellowstone and other such super volcanoes are far more dangerous to humanity in the short term than most geologists will give it credit. During college, I spent time looking at changes in the magnetic field through time, especially in the rock record. There was no concrete evidence that those changes affected the dominant paleo-weather patterns appreciably. Having said that, I have no ice core experience or data that would confirm or deny the rock record. If there is one constant in Earth history, it is change. Humans have enjoyed a particularly quiet geologist history and is what likely allowed us to proliferate. Had geologic time been more normal, the face of Earth would be mind bogglingly different.

I was looking at some stuff today on ice cores so that graph is strangely pertinent. my research was not related to magnetic shift, but more for celestial impact evidence. Anyway, thanks for the graph. let's add iridium levels and hexagonal diamond presence to the graph and see if they correlate hmmm.

I agree with the super volcano as a more likely candidate than magnetic shift, but one could be related to the other. Volcanoes do some serious damage. Just ask the end of the permian:) stupid siberian traps.

What, real science is nerdy now?

Generally when there are large words jumbled together with crazy looking graphs that are over my head, I categorize those involved as 'nerds' who hang out in a 'nerdry' with fellow 'nerds'. More or less because of my own insecurity around those who are clearly smarter than myself on the "nerdy" subjects being discussed. :p

Because I poached the graph from Wikipedia, I will offer the summarized text also through Wikipedia.... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milankovitch_cycles I doubt there is anyone on this board that wouldn't be able to grab a cursory understanding of the three cycles included in the Milankovitch Cycle. When take the three frequencies and add them to each other, the amplitude of the resulting wave is the sum of its constituent parts. Technically, we have entered an ice dominant stage of the cycle and we'll be there for a few millennia...
