IOS 5

It was released around 11:00 (Mountain), but it seems that Apple's servers are not up to the demand. The 700 MB download goes fine, and the update seems to go through, but then at the last step people are getting error messages. Lots of online posts about it not working, very few posts about it working. A few posts about bricked devices.

No luck on my iPad yet, and I'm not going to even try it on Chicky's iPhone until I'm pretty confident in it.

I've got a jailbroken iPad2. I'm stuck on 4.3.3, supposebly forever. What's so special about iOS 5?

Can't you restore to factory settings, then update? Lots of neat updates in iOS 5. An Android-style notification screen, a Blackberry-style messenger service, a new Safari browser with real tabs and a nifty new "reader" view that strips out all the advertising and stuff, and about 200 other updates.

They changed the error message screen to be less mysterious now. Instead of an "unknown error 3200" now it says "The iPad XXX cannot be restored at this time because the iPad software update server could not be contacted or is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later."

I kept getting 3000 level errors but it had put my phone in restore mode and it wouldn't let me go back. So I restarted the computer after updating everything and it through 2 more codes before it finally decided to go through. I'm at a loss?

I haven't had a chance to play round with it yet, but I'm anxious to see what the new iOS actually means for me other than all the hype...

Finally went through. iTunes still says "Restoring iPad Apps", but the iPad didn't say "syncing do not disconnect". I finally turned it on, and went through a bunch of setup steps. It's working, and has all the new features, but my apps aren't all loaded yet. They do appear to be slowly appearing, even though I'm using the iPad. I'll leave it connected until everything seems to be there...:ugh:

Is anyone else alittle disappointed with ios5? I wish I had my jailbroken 4.3.3 back. Apple needs to add sms quick reply to the os asap. Is anyone getting the 4S?

Wait a few weeks. The jailbreak will be out before long.

Sadly, it's not that simple. If I want to keep my jailbreak on the iPad2, I can't update. The method used to jailbreak everything except the iPad2 and the iPhone 4s utilizes a loophole in the hardware, which means Apple can't just issue a patch. With the new A5 chip in the iPad2 and 4s, that loophole is closed. iPad2 firmware 4.3.3 found a loophole in the software, which was promptly patched. The Dev Team has not, to my knowledge anyway, found a way to jailbreak the iPad2 or iPhone 4s.

Regardless, I'm 100% happy with my jailbroken 4.3.3 iPad!

I had zero issues with any of my devices. Two iPads and two iPhone 4's, zero problems. Perhaps its an issue with the windows version of iTunes?
There have surely been issues that apple has acknowledged and are working to fix. IMO, this has been one of their worse release days (yesterday and today) ever. I was lucky and have been running ios5 for about the last month and the GM since the day it was released. I've had absolutely zero problems with any of it until they released it to the general public...obviously they weren't ready for it.

IMO, ios5 adds the missing pieces to the iPad to make it a very functional work device. I've been using mine in all my meetings and appointments for a while and found a few missing things. Reminders, tabbed browsing, etc...all were fixed with ios5. I know there have been apps for most of the missing things already, but I'd rather not run a third party app to fix a problem that should be taken care of by Apple.

Also, the split keyboard rocks! Weird at first, but now I never turn it off and absolutely love it. Also, you can just flash your jailbroken iPad/iPhone to the newest release (it is that simple), but you will no longer be jailbroken.

Did any of you have problems getting the device reactivated? There were alot of people reporting that after successfully updating to IOS5 the phone was asking them to activate again and then that's when the problem would come up that activation, wether via wifi or iTunes would be unsuccessful.
