Just curious how you like it? I just got it hooked up, for the most part I like it but it does have a few little "quirks". If you have it, who are you using and how do you like them?

I've been thinking about it. What are the quirks you’ve noticed? I have DSL and I've heard its a little better. What system do you have? I have been looking at Vonage. Do you have a vn?

the main quirk is that when you call out, no matter if its calling your next door neighbor or your uncle Lou in New York, you have to dial 1+area code+number...not a big deal since I never use my home phone...mostly use my cell phone. For incoming calls they can just call your number regularly. I have comcast cable for my internet. The main reason I went with it was I was tired of paying $40+ a month for my phone that I never use. I read quite a bit on the different carriers, I went with Packet 8. What a vn? (virtual number?) if so, no I dont (but I can have as many as I want for a small fee each). I am actually having my number ported so for the time being I have a temporary number for my VoIP service.

BTW, if anyone decides to use packet 8 and you use me as your referer I get a credit on my bill :D

yeah, there was a setup fee, it was $50 but that also included the phone adapter that converts the analog signal to digital. I was wondering the same thing about changing ISPs so I was looking through their FAQs and came accrossed that question, it says their service is not tied to your isp so you can change isp's all you want. My isp has no clue I am doing this so really the setup fee has nothing to do with them.

yeah, the link is the one JeeperG posted www.thebluezone.com

talk to jamesgeologist about the inherent latency in VOIP. He was working with some companies to do this through sattelite and it seemed that they still had some latency issues.

I've got to agree with that. The latency is "curable" on a private network, but can be 'interesting' on the public internet. Satellite isn't impossible to cure but will be interesting to see how they/if they fix it.

Anyone who has qwest home phone service (or not) should check into their dsl, it won't slow down as people get on because they make sure that the capacity is never too much. If you have you own isp you can get 256k for 15 a month and 1.5 meg for 28 a month. Plus there's a 5 dolla discount if you have a home phone package. Pretty cheap really

I think james found a company that was doing the trailers for the FEMA workers. They had the latency whipped and it sounded good apparantly. I hope that they get it figured out for the masses cuz my boss was asking about it yesterday. The only reason he has a phone in the house is for the babysitters. I told him to think twice because he will need a UPC to keep his phones working in the event of a power outtage and even then it is not guaranteed as the ISP can experience power outtages or service outtages if the UPS on their servers starts to shut things down.

If you like this thing for your home phone, it might be ok. I am still sold on the nationwide long distance and all that from my wifeys T-Mob phone. 40$ a month.

I agree totally, about the latency and the cell phones...thats why I went with this over qwest. I looked into the latency issue quite a bit and what I kept finding was if its <300 ms on average you'll be fine...mine was never more than 30 ms...I only have a home phone for incoming calls mostly (from family and friends) if I dont know the number I dont answer it. The only people that know my cell are those that need to know it, so I always answer my cell ;)

Caleb, are you still using Packet8? Vonage sucks! I HIGHLY recomend to everyone DO NOT USE VONAGE :mad2: What a lousy company, the worst customer service I've ever encountered. I'm looking at Packet8 or Galexievoice. Anyone else have any input? DON'T USE VONAGE!!!

Thats the exact same thing I found a ton of people saying about Vonage when I was researching the different options. I also heard that NONE of them have outstanding customer service. I am still using Packet8 and its been great. The only issue I have had is porting my number but from what I have heard from many other people is that its qwest that slows that down...everytime I have called their customer service I have gotten right in and they have been able to help me. If I were to do it again in another house I would still use Packet8. Some people may not like how they do their billing though, you dont get a paper statement each month they just deduct it from your account and your statement is online...personally I prefer it this way as I never look at any of my statements anyways, they're junk mail to me :D

The wife is starting a new business and wanted to have a dedicated phone number for her company. Rather than adding a third quest line I called vonage and am using their $15 / month plan. So far the phone line has about 30 minutes of use over the past 2 months, but I don't have any complaints.

I will have to keep an eye on these other guys, so if Vonage gives me any grief I have options. But so far even the wife is happy, and many of you know the value and difficulty of that

I do watch my account and if I see something that looks wrong I get online and check it out. All my stuff is setup through my CU so I dont have to write any checks...it just gets paid :p
