Is Snakes considered part of 5MP?

I was taught that snakes (rattlesnake and constrictor trails) is NOT part of 5 mile pass.

It's confusing because there are roads tons of dirt roads connecting 5mp to snakes. It's tough to know where the open rec area ends. People out at 5MP seem to have the attitude that you can drive wherever you want, as long as you don't run over vegetation. I hope that attitude doesn't transfer over to snakes.

So the golden question is, is Snakes considered part of the 5mp recreation area?

Not a def answer, but rather an observation:
You def can't shoot there and as you pass the snakes parking lot (heading West) you see the sign that is even farther past Sunshine Canyon that you are now leaving the 5mile pass area...

Interesting, I've never noticed that sign. Good observation, and great map above.

Most of the roads around the Snakes area are still on private property as well. Kurt has some really good maps, I believe that part of Constrictor actually runs on or right against private property.

Not that it has any def answers either, but the people who really cared back in the 90's and early 2000's did lots more foot work and research than any of us combined now dayz. (erra being when locals got the aproval to take rigs other than ATV's on the trails)

"Ill answer a few questions.

Do maps show Constricor? I have an early map (30's?) that shows a trail 1/2 way up the canyon. As for current maps, no.. but on the same hand, they don't show Rattlesnake, Charlies trail nor hundereds of miles of other trails in the area. This IS something we (U4WDA) are working on with the BLM. They know that the current trail inventory is not too current. It was last inventoried in ~91'? And likely didn't include anything deemed not passable by a stock rig (such as many of the inventories throughout Utah). They know of the current trails in the area, and they know how dear to our hearts they are. I spoke for quite a while about them.

As for the future of of 5MPRA. They will shortly eliminate all of the "open" cross country travel areas, and they will limit all motorized travel to existing trails only. What we need to do is make sure all of our routes (as far south as Little Moab) get recognized as existing (as I mentioned their inventory is way outdated).

How will Rattlesnake and Constrictor fair?

Rattlesnake is in a "open" cross country travel area as best I can tell (I will inspect closer at a meeting with the BLM). As long as we can get them to recognize it (if they don't already, I don't know which ones they have inventoried), it will be fine. Constrictor is the same situation though it does not lie entirely in an open travel area. In fact a large part of Constrictor exists on private property (as many of the area trails cross in and out of). Turn of the century patent mine claims left all sorts of owners out in the area. Once again if we can get Constrictor recognized, it is fine. This of course will be subject to a public hearing (I assume sometime next year) and of course some negative input from all the hikers that enjoy the scenery in the area ;).

I'll post more as it comes, hopefully this thread will end here (for a while) as I am honestly wore out on the whole "internet/Constrictor" thing. Please respect that as I will..."

How can we help influence the BLM to recognize the trails so they can be put on a map? I would be very interested in attending a meeting about such.

The 5MP RMP project was put on hold for funding and budget issues, and now they are not working on any additional RMP's until the litigation on the others are resolved. We were able yo get the route inventory map from the BLM, I have a copy of the data. Steve Jackson manipulated their GIS days over a topic map which was a helpful way to determine what is and isn't inventoried.

On your map, the "Target Shooting Area Closure" is the same boundy as the Special Recreation Management Area (SRMA) known as Five Mile Pass. So Rattlesnake and Constrictor are technically within the SRMA of 5MP, but also partially on private property as many will note. But not all of 5MP is open travel. Rattlesnake exists within the open travel area and private property. Most others exist in the area limited to existing routes. But what is "existing" is a fun question indeed. Do some hiking.:)

A man ahead of the curve. There are indeed many routes out there but as Kurt further updates, the new RMP is on hold indefinitel. So changes aren't coming anytime soon. This means that the status quo continues and access to this area is still opened. Revision to the RMP could bring some closure or non at all. Probably lots however.

This map has helped me out a lot lately in order to help distinguish what the open ohv area is at 5 mile pass... take a look and see what ya think in Google Earth. The file called Snakes Trails - 5 Mile Pass.kmz has a transposed BLM map on the trails in google so you know where you’re at for reference.
