I put this here because I figured it would get a better response since more people will see this in here vs. the trail talk section.

This next weekend, we have a scout camp with our troop and have been searching for a place to go. We have had this on our list of places to go, but we haven't been able to find solid info on how to get there. Does anyone have any info on how? I remember hearing something about taking a road up through Stockton, but I'm unsure. Thanks for your help.

Or does anyone else have a good scout camp place not too far from the salt lake area other than 5 mp, stansbury island or af canyon?

thanks for the links, sadly the gps file is no longer there though. So kinda back to square one. There is an intersection in the first waypoint description that is a good starting point, but i don't want to end up doing this for the first time blindly with scouts. i would be ok with GPS coordinates or good directions though. Thanks again.

I've seen some primitive camp areas up on top of Lake Mountain, Great views but if you're too late in the year I wouldn't want to be up there during a snow storm. I've taken Scouts out by Little Moab (didn't go in all the way), it's ugly and out in the middle of nowhere but good for an overnight.

For other scout friendly spots, try the area around Horseshoe Springs/Iosepa or South Willow Canyon near Grantsville.

Black rock canyon south of 5MP would be great (other little canyons in that southern range are good too), as well as Harker Canyon South of Vernon, Vernon Res would be 'ok', North Willow canyon has some decent spots, add an hour and hit up Simpson springs on the PE trail, or the Pet Cemetery area along the PE (lookout pass area).

At the 4way intersection by the gas station turn east. It will turn south and pass by the ballfield. It turns to dirt after crossing a creek culvert. At the fork after the culvert stay to the right. That one goes all the way to Jacob City. There's many smaller roads in the area but just stay on the biggest/main road.

If we get the snow they say we are going to get, the road up might get pretty iffy to get up there. It gets pretty skinny and off camber in a couple spots

I can vouch for that... I slid off the road a number of years ago, in one of the many shady corners... had to drive overland downhill to get out. :(

I think the window for that trip may have closed for you. :D

I have had good luck going to Settlement Canyon, and North Willow with my 11yr old Scouts. South Willow is improved camping at $16 for first vehicle and $8(?) for additional vehicles. Settlement is $5 per vehicle at the gate and it closes at 6pm (kinda keeps traffic down in the evenings, but parents can't join up late in the evening), it is paved road all the way to the top. North Willow is free of charge and there is about 4 improved camp spots up higher and about 6 or 8 pullout spots down lower.

well we ended up camping right above tibble fork reservoir. nothing like a scout getting sick and puking his guts out all night and waking up to a few inches of snow. it was a good time though. and all the boys but one had a good time haha

That is where my first scout camp out was as well! I stayed up until 4am the night before, slept in a shelter half with a friend and was COLD that night.
