jeep Cherokee anti theft issues

I recently bought a 1999 Cherokee and ever since I bought it, the anti theft system automatically turns itself on after about 30 seconds of getting out and shutting the door, even without locking the door. Then when I open the door the alarm goes off (which consists of the parking lights blinking and the ignition System disabled) until I hit the unlock button on the key fob. So when I go out to grab something out of the jeep and I don't have the key since I know it's unlocked, the alarm goes off for 10 minutes or whatever. I've been redoing the suspension the last little while and every time I do anything on it the dang alarm goes off and there is nothing I can do about it unless I track down the fob and hit the button. (in hind sight I could have removed a terminal from the battery) this is annoying because it goes off literally every time I bump the jeep around at all. have any of you had issues with the Cherokee anti theft systems?

It sounds like an aftermarket anti theft system to me... What's the fob/remote look like? I don't think the factory alarm would have an ignition kill function, nor would it have the auto-arm feature.

Find the alarm make/model and download a user manual from the internet. It'll tell you everything you need to do as far as re-programming it, which includes turning on/off the auto-arm feature.

Under the driver side dash somewhere. Often zip tied to the steering column bracket or something in the immediate vicinity. Could be in the driver side kick panel as well.
