Had the same problem

I had the same thing happen to my sons 1990 XJ. I Checked the fuel pump at the rail, 32 lb pressure in spec. It turned out to be the ingnition module that is under the coil. It would sputter and die when It got hot then not start at all. When it was cold it would run great.

We had an 88 that wouldn't start somtimes but ended up being the fuel lines. Sounds like yours is a diff problem thou, ours was random when it wouldn't start. Good luck:)
