Without a solid axle swap, I don't think it'll be as capable as an equivilent Cherokee/Grand (ZJ, WJ), but for what they are, I think they're a pretty decent little vehicle. I'll never own one, but that's for other reasons.....

I believe they have the infamous D35, but am not sure. Could be the 8.25 which is an OK axle. As illustrated in the above picture and from KJs that I've seen off-road, the rear does 90% of the suspension work.

They're ok, but for half the price you could have had a good used XJ that rocks way harder offroad than the Liberte (that's the proper French spelling, btw hehehehe)

I hate IFS

agreed  and i hate jeeps but.... i have to admit with the right mods i think it would be cool to have liberty just cause its different, who wheels a liberty? not to many. any one can build an xj or a wrangler or a yota, but a liberty? i say solid axle swap it, :D youll have a very unique rig

I think TrailReady already beat everyone to it!

The Liberty is ok for it's citified target market, other than that it's a slightly-more-capable RAV4 hehehehe They sure are comfy though.

And: they're Trail Rated. That's badass!

I can't help myself. I'm just mad that they dumped the Cherokee, screwed up the Grand, and have not yet built the Rescue.

The liberty is awesome. No, it's not a hardcore wheeler, so what? They're fun to drive, and capable enough to take you and some friends (or kids) camping. I like the 3.7 liter too. I'd buy one.

That's one of my issues with the Liberty. A Cherokee can pack a lot more camping junk and haul kids at least as comfortably. (and all I heard from Jeep promotional literature, magazines and sales monkeys was that there was MORE room for that stuff. Come on, I'm not the brightest guy, but don't try to pull that kind of dumb sh!t over on me. I don't see anybody able to fit a full size 35" spare in the rear cargo area of a KJ--tough to do in an XJ, but I did it)

I have seen a guy around town with a more than slightly modified KJ. It looks good but then again there is some cha ching in to it being what looks like a daily driver. If i remember right he posted up here a bit ago. I also think he had swapped in a solid axle.

I never said you could pack more stuff, in a KJ than in an XJ. XJ's have more room and are easier to build. I hated libertys until I drove one for a week. They're fun to drive, and a lot nicer than cherokees. That doesn't equate to off-roadability, but I guess it all depends on what you want it for.

exactly... a friend of mine got one.. it did seem to be roomier up front than my old XJ... but way smaller everywhere else... very nimble in town though.

XJ's are a packing challenge themselves hahahah

dang. That's not half bad.
this goes against every thing i stand for (being a toyota guy) but i honestly think that if you put a solid axle under that thing it wouldnt be that bad, its got a short wheel base witch can be afective in some situations. its new so its less likely to break down and new makeing it somewhat comfy. (can you get it with leather??? :D ) id take one. i think its got potential
