Did anyone catch this on the news this morning? I saw it on channel 5. Reported it was up near "silver flats" or "silver lake" or something. Guess the guy rolled his jeep and his passenger that had already gotten out before he rolled tried to give him CPR but couldn't revive him.

Anyone know who this is? Bummer no matter how you look at it.

Seemed like the "real deal" from the news story. They had video interviewing a guy from I think the Utah County Search and Rescue. He said they had to take ATV's just to get to where the jeep was. Looked like it all happened pretty late last night.

They need a rescue crew.....
If they needed four wheelers to get where he was then they can't get his rig out....
Blacky to the recscue...
That's a way bad bummer...

I thought silver lake ---ohh wait that's forest lake right...
Yah stay on the street and you go up to silver...?

The news was describing it as very rugged terrain so I doubt it was on the road.

Unfortunately, if the reporter is not a outdoors person, just the paved road up to tibble fork could be described as 'rugged terrain' when speaking about the area surrounding the road.

From the SL Tribune:

Driver dies in rollover

A man died in a rollover accident above Silver Lake in American Fork Canyon Monday night, police said. A 911 call was placed at 9 p.m. from the passenger of the vehicle, a woman who got out before the accident because the unpaved road conditions were so rough, according to reports. The vehicle rolled shortly after she exited, said police. The woman performed CPR on the man and AirMed was dispatched from Salt Lake City at 9:12 p.m., but rescuers were unable to reach the victim in time to save his life, police said.

There is some very esposed trail above Silver Flats Resevoir on both sides, to the Northest and also to the Northeast, one heads to an old cabin/mine on the mountain to the West of the lake and the other heads to the Eagle-Earl mine at the top of Major Evans Gulch... this was the trail that was washed out until a few years ago, but it still has very steep parts and alot of exposure, not to be in the dark alone...

:(

Yeah, I know the EXACT spot you are referring to...

I am going to contact the FS on possibly allowing a few of us to "fix" that and build a water diverter above it to keep it from happening again...

So does anybody know anythig more about this????? Like how old the guy was. Was he in a legal wheeling area????? I know this may sound callous but there are alot of people on this board who have spent time up there doing clean ups and envormental stuff for the blm......... I hope this incident dosent undermine the work that has been done to keep this canyon open to wheelers.
And I really do feel bad for the guys family if he has one.... Its sad this kind of stuff happens, For me I guess its a reminder of how importent safty equipment really is.........

It shouldn't, I would be willing to bet I know which trail he was on and they are legal, some of them are hard to access by vehicle but they will be able to get the jeep out...

Just saw a report on 4 News at 5:30 about the accident. Jeff Yorgason was the driver and he was driving a Toyota Pickup. The lady with him was his girlfriend, the news didn't mention her name. The reporter said they were about 15 miles above Silver Lake, seems like an overestimate so take it for what its worth. Apparently he was an engineer who really enjoyed nature and taking photographs.

yeah, prolly a little over estimate...but for someone that isn;t really into wheelin and stuff a mile long "rough" road can seem like its 10-15 miles...:p

hey Kurt, if you do get something going be sure to let us know...I would love to get out there and help...

Wow, what a shame. That's a hard way to learn you are in over your head. Wheeling solo isn't a very good idea either. Let's all chock this up as a learning experience.

I would like to know where exactly this took place; my money is on the spot Shawn spoke of; that second switchback is killer. (oops bad choice of words).

It would be fun to go recover the rig. I think someone needs to go on a little recon mission to see where it is. I would suggest either working with or without the FS to recover the rig, at least get it to where a tow truck could get to it. A couple years ago a bunch of us recovered a Blazer that was up Butterfield Canyon; it was quite an adventure. After we recover it I would suggest a small work party to replant any damaged foliage for extra brownie points.

EZ (Still thinking of the 'benefit' run up AF, I'll keep y'all posted).

Hey, I'm planning a trip up AF canyon this weekend (saturday). I'll post a thread in RC trips.

I don't know the area, so maybe a few of you can show me the way and we can check out the rig's position.
