Have you ever wondered when you go to your local pick n pull. Who sets the prices? I'll give you an example. Today I go down and pull off a beat up old Saginaw power steering pump. All I needed it for was the top spout and cap. (Going to extend one with a 1 1/2" hose) so I take it in and ask the Dawg, how much? He goes mmmm, that'll be $5:58. I mean, where the hell did he come up with a random number like that? Every time I go there, I feel like the price will depend on how the Dawg there is feeling that day. Do you guys get that same feeling?

They've got a price board as you walk in. I feel like the prices are way too high for old junk. Most items are about 1/2 of new.

Pick n Pull charged me a core charge one time for an AC compressor. I asked what the hell did he mean the core charge. He started explaining to me that I had to bring the bad one in, I stopped him and explained what they use cores for, to rebuild them. What the hell is a junk yard going to do with a core?

I had that same fight at A1 in Ogden for a power steering pump.


Im not one to create a scene or even complain about much but that struck a nerve for me. Trying to charge me 30 bucks for a 30 year old pump and a 30 bucks for a core charge. Redonkulas. They thought they had me because I had already pulled the pump off the car.

I set the pump on the ground while I was fighting with them.....with the lines pointed down on purpose. lol After 10 minutes and they werent budging I left the pump there in a big puddle of fluid and havent been back since

Isn't there a law that requires a core charge on some stuff? Or is that just batteries?

tear a part is the most reasonable one.

Pick N pull is literally twice a much on almost everything.

I went to pick and pull in provo orem area. i was hunting for a small window for the xj but ended up seeing a front bumper that looked like my style. i got it off and man was it heavy. when i got to the front with it, the dawg was in shock that i got it up to the desk by myself. he then told me that multiple people have wanted it but he would not pull it off for them. he gave me the bumper for around $25 and helped me load it in... they are weird and finicky about stuff but i figure the fun part is learning how to get what you want for cheaper. Isn't that why we go in there in the first place?

I just prefer to let them charge me for a much cheaper item, because they don't know what my part is. If you don't know I'm gonna make sure I get a good deal

picked up a front skid plate off an old XJ at pick-n-pull in SLC, chick ran it up as a bracket over 15" long. $16.43 and it's mine now.

This is pretty much the point of my thread. I sometimes get stuff for way cheap and other times I' m think'n, what the hell! I could buy it new for that!
I've been going to these places for 40 years, so I have a pretty good idea what things are worth. But each time I go to a pick n pull the price seems to be some random number that just comes to the guy at the time.

They do not pay alot for these vehicles anyway. Most of what they make out of the cars is money in scrap metal. There is a script of prices that they do have. The front people are told to use this as a guide line. If you are there alot, and a nice person, you prices are cheaper. If you cause problems, you are the ones they make up the difference with. I,more then once, have walked out with a hand full of small nuts, screws, or molding clips. The front desk guy just waved me through saying your good. This stuff would have cost about $50 at the dealer.

Very true. I have plopped a pile of fuses and relays on the counter with some other parts and been told to just keep them. With relays being a few buck each I'm probably over $100 worth of free parts in my last few trips. Plus it's handy to have a few in the tools bag for spares.
