ok my old cj7 is getting to the point where I have to make a decision...

For the most part it is still stock... the only mods so far is a 4 inch lift, 4 bbl carb and traded the 85 m20 for a 86 d44... the engine is getting on in life (300,000+ miles) and I have another engine in the garage that could be thrown in with some work...

Or should I get rid of the 4.2 and get something newer like a 4.0 or maybe a 5.0 v8 (no chevy stuff for me...) then change out the stick shift for an auto and the d30/d44 for d60's?

If I decided to sell the heep which would get me a better price? one close to original or one heavily modified?

I like my old school wheeler but I think it drove its last time (on current engine) to moab this year...

OK comments appreciated....

Keep it stock. Nice ones are hard to find and you (I did) will pay a good price to have one if done right.

Everyone has a modified Jeep, but few have a stock built Jeep.

just a side note... got my registration forms for both my 85 cj and my 96 zj.... both are on a value based tax.... guess which one was higher?

My cj was 79.50 and the zj is 69.50 to register...

Now that is just crazy.

You could build it but you'll never get that money back. I think it comes down to sentimental value. Stock Jeeps are cool, but definitely not for hard wheeling.

As for motor swaps, what suits your needs best? If you like the V8, go that way. If you don't mind the 4.0, choose that. I'd imagine the cost and installation is close to the same.

Im a chevy guy....

But the ford small block fits so well in jeeps... If you have the need for power, I would go with a mustang 5.0L HO engine. Problem with around 300hp is the other upgrades that will be needed.
