Just picked this up from Tacoman99 to replace my 1986 4Runner with a blown motor. Except for a few little bits I'll be transferring from my old rig, it's going to stay stock while I get it cleaned up and reliable and get to know it. It needs a new rear main and has saggy springs. It runs a little rough, I expect to clear that up with fresh gas, new plugs and wires, a little seafoam, etc. Tentative long term plans are OME/Dakar front and rear, 5.29s and my 255/85r16 KM2s, duals and/or 4.7 transfer case gears, and a locked rear. And probably a 3RZ swap :D.

I'm new to the solid front end. Something I don't see an answer for in a quick perusal of Pirate4x4's Toyota Bible, how far can I lift before I need to worry about crossover/high steer? Will 2 inches or less of suspension lift affect my steering?

I'm not an expert but I'm sure 2" should be just fine.

I don't think it is a issue of how much it is lifted, but rather the J-arm seem to be the week points. I am sure that you need 2-3 inches of lift to have enough clearance to fit hi-steer.

So I'd never used Seafoam before today, but I'm converted for sure:

Before (click for video):

After:

Made a big difference, it idles much smoother now. Got some plugs and nifty blue wires on the way from Low Range (and a 22RE badge for the front of the block, because I'm fly like that), and then I'll be ready to get emissions done.

Found out today I have to retitle the truck - Tacoman99 wasn't able to get the title from the original owner he bought the truck from, and it turns out the truck wasn't ever titled in Utah. So the two options are to find out where it was titled, and get a replacement title from them and then get that title transferred, OR put in an application to just retitle the thing, which it looks like will be easier. So I've got to get an officer out in the morning to do a vin inspection, and then send in this massive application for a new title, and hopefully have my new beast on the road in the next couple days.

Nice score, if your in Magna Call 743-7000 to set up a vin inspection. If you have a temp tag and want to drive to Riverton in the evening I can take care of it for you.

They wouldn't give me a temp tag until I get it titled, and I could drive it down there and dodge your coworkers along the way but I'd rather not :). The guys in Magna are always hanging out at the Reams parking lot on Saturday morning, they'll be happy for something to do. Thanks for the number!

Nice rig. Sounds much better with the seafoam. That was on my list of things to do when I got my '90 PU running. A lot of space in that engine. Seems like it would be a perfect vehicle for a engine swap.

Any other plans for the truck that you want to give out right now? or are you going secretive with it.

edit: didn't see the info under the photo at the top :p seems like it would be a good candidate for a 350 swap :D

The 350 is a great motor but if I end up swapping it will probably be another Yota motor, I'm looking hard at the 3rz now (turbo would be nice :D). I'm not an elitist or brand snob, but I am a bit of a Toyota fan-boy. Any motor swap will probably be for another Toyota powerplant.

I don't blame ya. I am the same way, but I have contemplated the 350. Then I decided to go with a 1UZFE to stay with the toyota powerplant like your talking. Currently working on getting me a donor for it :D Then I will be good to go with my swap.

There are quite a few 1UZFE's here in the state. Just a thought process of mine, and a possible idea for you.

Are you planning on putting the rear axle from your '86 into this? Bolt-in swap, 3" wider, plus you've already re-geared...

Also, if/when you want to go crossover steering, you can do it without doing a high steer setup if you're trying to keep it lower. (keep the tie rod down low, and you get more oil pan room) It's pretty hard to argue with the prices of high-steer kits though.....

Nice! congrats on the new rig! Why don't you put rear springs up front? 2-3" lift and it moves your axle forward a couple inches, and if you'd rather keep it closer to 2", use the saggy springs that are in the rear of it right now! Free lift that rides and functions great!

ps.....350's fit great!

Yup. Too many benefits to not swap it over.

So, I guess I don't understand the configuration of high steer. I understand what crossover is, but what makes high steer high?

Thinking about RUFs for sure. Definitely cheaper than OME, but will the stock front driveshaft handle the longer reach and flex?
