key won't turn!!!!!!

So, I get in the Jeep and turn the key. The key turns to the on position but won't turn any farther to spin the starter motor . So, has anyone ever changed out their ignition key cylinder? Anything to watch out for or that is tricky?

Mine did the same thing only I couldn't turn the jeep off. It's not real hard. You need a steering wheel puller and you need to be carefull with the blinker switch stuff. It's just plastic and can break easily. You pull the wheel and get all the blinker stuff out of the way and there's a slot you stick a screwdriver down to depress a key out of the way that holds the ignition cylinder in.

What year is it? If it is pre airbag, it is a saginaw colum....chevy stuff. you should be able to find a lot of info with a google search.

Just wanted to add that if it does have an airbag, make sure you un hook the battery first.....

It is a 1988 YJ so I don't think I have airbags. Thanks for the heads up though.
