-- the centering tool-- is it absolutely necessary? Keep in mind that I haven't examined the factory procedure in any real detail yet, just skimmed over it. But I was in the garage looking things over and it occurred to me that I had better ask and plan on getting that tool if I absolutely need it. :D

What say ye, Toyota people? Dana 60's just need wrenches.

Tacoma,

I have never rebuilt Toyota knuckles, but I have rebuilt several Samurai ones and they are basically mini versions and I never needed a centering tool.

thanks Stephen. I'm thinking, after perusing this reprint from CCOT, that this tool can be improvised by those used to improvising tools. :D They look pretty similar to old Dana 60 closed knuckles too, and they didn't need a centering tool either. *shrug

If that's not the case, I'm all ears.

Start with a 1mm shim on the bottom, shim the rest on the top to get your proper preload on the knuckle bearings. Run Marlin HD seals and your in business.

that stuff is at least as good as the aftermarket grease... which is why Kurt recommends using factory Toyota fluids whenever possible.

Toyota Center tool

If you where putting together a Frt diff from misc parts, a center tool would be nice to have but for a basic overhaul keeping track of shims and placement is all you have to worry about,
My rational is to keep the bottom shim pack the same thickness as it was, and adjust from the top if needed.
but as far as the lube, thats a crazy situation, adding Mac Donolds burger grease to the original semi fluid grease, yep no problem. just pick out the big chunks of steel if you had a bearing or birf failure
