There's got to be more to this story. Not making any judgments until more comes out.
My interpretation of what I have read is that they were riding their UTV where they should not have been and the guy driving the UTV was trying not to get caught and get a ticket. I have not read anything that says he tried to run an officer over or anything. I have had several interactions with Forest Service and BLM LEO's over the years and their is a different mentality to being a federal LEO as opposed to a local LEO. Many of them behave in a manner that they have a different set of rules that they operate by.

I know the article has not been updated with a lot of info.

But I don't see any reason he should have shot them. Were they carrying drugs? Machine guns? Trying to run the officer over? If not, the officer needs some prison time.

I don't feel like the BLM guys need to be carrying AR15's either. Or acting like swat officers.

Unless I missed it somewhere in the article, it never mentions anything about AR15's or running tactical drills acting like swat officers (or maybe you're talking in generalities?). I also don't think the model of weapon has anything to do with the incident. If they can do their job better with an AR15, then so be it.

Generalities. Yes.

I've seen BLM officers with AR15s. Why? Seems a bit (shall I say, OVERKILL)

And shooting someone fleeing on an ATV seems a bit overkill. Unless they are trying to kill the officer. Then sure, I don't have an issue with protecting himself

This sounds like and “OVERKILL” cnn news story full assumptions and generalities and blame game.

Also note the location this occurred at... Speaking in generalities this could have been a smuggler of sorts? Possibly armed with the a weapon? If I was an officer I would want the most protection I was capable of handling.

Interesting read

I would point out that they lumped a CO shooting into their story from last month that was without a doubt justifiable. I am all for returning the power to local agencies but lets be real, local law enforcement officers make poor decisions too. This could have just as easily have been a sheriff or local policeman that made a bad decision to shoot. Not to bash law enforcement, I don't know the whole story, but it sounds like an imperfect person made an imperfect decision, I wish there were more perfect people but so far I think there has only been 1.

On a more positive note, this story was further down the page on that read http://www.freerangereport.com/inde...intimidation-lawsuit-against-san-juan-county/

Being shot by a police officer is one of my most irrational fears. I understand there is less than 0.001% chance of it happeneing but it is just such a helpless feeling. I had an encounter in my 20's where had I been in my home instead of a friends, I would have shot an intruder that was a plain clothes officer and I would have went to prison for life. He didn't identify himself as an officer and forced his way into a home with no warrant.

I like to think I could defend myself with lethal force if justified but shooting unarmed people should be really hard to justify unless they are in your home at night and you have no affiliation with them. This stuff is scary to me.

That said, it is aggrivating to try and look past the bias on every news site these days to figure out what really happened. Especially when many sites are so blatantly bias, I wonder if I am sensitive to that or if I have just become a sheep and am following the narrative. Hard to believe the narrative goes both ways though. No where in the original article did it elude to the fact that the BLM claims driving in a restricted area is grounds for using lethal force. But the freerangereport sure makes it sound that ways.
