I use a degreaser I get from a friend who owns a janitorial supply company called "Solves it". It comes concentrated and you can use it full strength or dilute it. At full strength it will cause your skin to dry and crack if you on't get it off.

If paint isn't a worry then Oven cleaner is great.. but it will take off the paint as well

I used a scraper for the big crud, and then a toasty pressure washer much like.. the one.. that's in my driveway. Worked great. :D

-- Hot water, high pressure. Made short work of removing crud-- but I wasn't worried about getting water into anything, block was heading to the shop anyway

Thanks for all the feed back. I also did a little research and there is a product called mean green degreaser that seems to also work well. I figured I could remove a few easy to get to parts, clean them and then head to the car wash for the pressure wash.

Well, decided to strip down the engine compartment and put some elbow work to it. I'll post a pic once done.
