Legality of 1 ton axles---moved from a For Sale post

I was able to get it licenced (it helps to know people) never had any problems with driving it on city streets (would not recomend I-15). The front is a Dana 44 HD, Rear is a Dana 60 HD. Both were just rebuilt with new gears, breaks, seals etc.

why shouldn't they ?? Nothing unsafe about them... unless your tires aren't covered! you menace to windshields!
They recently changed the law, but I have never been harassed about it. Cops simply don't know the difference.

That's kind of what I was wondering... there is no safety issue that can possibly count EXCEPT TIRE COVERAGE, and that's not really an axle issue anyway.

So. What specifically would make them illegal OTHER than tire coverage, or is that what you meant, Sinac??????

I would be curious to see this law as well.....

I think Tacoma is on the right track since 1 ton axles are usually wider. As long as tires are covered, it shouldn't matter.

I'm 'barely' legal with the 38".... I'm about 1/2" taller than I should be.
I'm pretty sure his Gross Weight is higher so he actually has an additional inch or two over jeeps :p

His 'runner is a 3/4 ton?

the law isn't broken down to 1/2T, 3/4T or 1T...it's simply the GVWR from the factory (and as far as I know there is no legal way to change this on a vehicle). Jeeps fall in under the 4500lb mark, runners fall in the 4500-7500...jeeps get 24" runners get 26"...so like I said, he gets a couple more inches than you ;)

I went to look into getting my 4runner registered and the guy said I was in the 24" range and I was BARELY legal I think I may have been a half an inch over in fact. I think I will have to go get my rig weighed so I can add 2 inches :D

It has nothing to do with the current GVW, it is the factory GVW that they look at. Unless you can alter the VIN tag, yer staying at 24".

Any "new law" of that type would conflict with this one

http://www.le.state.ut.us/~code/TITLE41/htm/41_04194.htm

equal to or greater in strength and durability than the original parts provided by the original manufacturer.

Unless for some reason the OEM spec was for something stronger than a D60, which would make a D60 illegal (like that will ever happen on a jeep)

I stand corrected if your tag really says your under 4500. I am pretty sure Greg was saying awhile ago (a LONG while ago :p) that he was barely rated over 4500 which put him at an allowed 26"

Like Shawn said, it has nothing to do with your actual weight, its the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating from the factory

this is what i remembered reading...you may want to check your tag Taco4life
link 1 and link 2

of course different options and trim levels will have different GVWR so I guess there could be some under and some over.

and since this gets posted in jsut about every lift law thread I figured why not in this one :D
