Lengthening driveshafts

Location

What have you guys done? Ever done it yourself? I'm a very cheap person so I'm thinking of sleeving a section of tube inside the driveshaft and having it welded.

What do you guys think? Am I crazy?

i've sleeved a driveline as a trail fix. it will work but will vibrate like crazy. if your driving on the road just have a driveline shop do it.

It is something that can be done but like it's stated above it will wobble and vibrate like crazy. If it's not your DD then OK. If it is pony up the cash and get it done.....it's not too bad

I would find some drivelines that are longer than you need and shorten them. It is a lot cheaper than lengthening one. How long do you need ? I have some longer ones from wagoneers and my scrambler that might work for you.

Well Dave both my driveshafts are the double cardan style and I'd like to not lose that so I think I'm going to have to have them lengthened. I'm not sure how long they need to be, I'll take measurements tonight.

I had one lengthened not too long ago. It was 80 if balanced 60 if not. I am cheap too, but don't think I would bother doing it myself for the price they charge.

Man, did their prices go up or what? I had my rear done by them with a double cardan join put on from another shaft I brought in, and I had it shortened (added dual cases) and it was in the $135 range...

Ouch! I think Six States might be one of the more expensive driveline shops. Slyco and GRS are probably a lot cheaper. I haven't priced the work yet, just checking out my options.

You're all WEAK SAUCE!
A little place in lehi. Gaylon Pugh's driveline, I think, the spelling may be wrong. I just stumbled on to them when driving through lehi one day. They gave me a good deal, so I'll definitely go there again.

Tom Wood's did mine. I took in a front xj shaft to have it lengthened. He told me it would be $80. The slip was loose so he couldn't balance it without putting in a new one, so I just took it without being balanced because I didn't have another $45 for a new one. So I was out the door without balance for $60. Great service. They repainted it, gave me a calendar and wrapped it all up in plastic.

I recently had a samurai driveshaft shortened and balanced for forty bucks. Do a little shopping around before you shell out too much cash.

it's about twice as much to have one lengthed as it is to shorten one.

FWIW I got my driveshaft extended about 13 inches. Gaylon Pugh's in Lehi did it. Cost was $85.00. Dropped it off in the morning and picked it up in the afternoon. He does great quality work. Very nice to work with as well.

For the last several years I have built all my own drivelines. I use really heavy pipe and I have yet to pretzel one. My current ones I welded together while they were on my buggy. That way I could spin them and tweak them until they were straight. They spin true and I have not noticed any vibrations from them. If it was a daily driver I would probably use this method to build the driveshafts, then take them to a driveline shop and have them balanced. I figure if I can do it myself why would I pay someone else to do it? But then again, I'm cheap...
