OK... let me start, by saying I DID NOT DO THIS! I WOULD NOT DO THIS! EVER!!!

But those of us with kids, we've all joked about having too much stuff to carry in the car, so we'll have to strap the kids to the roof to get home.

I had my 6 year old going for a good 5 minutes sunday night. His biggest concern was that it was raining.

Finally my wife broke the joke, and told him that we would never do that, and that we'd go to jail if we did.

Which let to the question...

Exactly what could a person be charged with for ratchet strapping a kid to a roofrack and driving along?

Just random curiosity... please don't flame, I would never do this. This post should in no way be seen as endorsement for anyone else to try this... in fact, if you think this might be a good idea, please go drink drano or something.

Smith said the mother told officers it was safe because she had the box secured to the van with a clothes hanger.

That just made my day

BWAHAHAHAHA, this thread is priceless. I think it all depends on how you strap the kid down. Now just a ratchet strap across the neck would be worse than 3, one across the chest, the waist, and the legs. It might be better to just have a tether that they could hold on to and maybe stand up and do some roof surfing.

So because of (c) it is perfectly legal to ride on a cargo rack?

I don't see it being much worse than 6 kids in a car with 4 seatbelts... And really, how many of us have wanted to do this ourselves, or strap one of the kids on the roof?

I think a tow rope and rollers skates would probably be the best/safest method. You could probably tow a bunch of kids.

Growing up in the late 50's early 60's my dad would tow us behind the old Ford with a rope with us on inner tubes on the ice packed roads of Cottonwood Heights :D
And hooky bobbin was hanging onto the back of cars on steel wheeled roller skates or in slick shoes on the icy roads.
And I only almost died a few times:cool:

We used to hitch rides on passing cars while skateboarding all the time. Also rode the roof rack a bunch, on the back roads LOL

Yes we should have been killed.

A couple years ago while I was up in Oregon visiting my folks for Christmas a guy was on the news who killed one and critically injured another of his kids doing that.

Anyone else seen Teen Wolf? I so want to do flips while surfing on a cargo truck! That was Rad!

Looks like the back of a pickup is allright too. We used to travel from Idaho to St. George in the back of the truck. Oh the good times!
