Let's talk 6.7l Fords. Good, bad and the ugly....

What are people's experiences? I'm having a bit of a challenge finding a nice 7.3l for not stupid $. 6.7L aren't exactly cheap but I could probably swing one if they are worth it. (I'd have to give up the commuter car for a year or two and drive the 6.7L)

No feedback other than the rest of the truck is super solid and proven, I hope the engine is.

I'm in a similar spot, Marc. I'll be watching this!

I worked with a guy over in Nevada that had a 6.7L Ford as a work/personal truck. He commuted in it weekly for over a year from Spanish Fork to 75mi past Elko. It didn't get much off-pavement time, but had many hours & miles on it. I don't remember him ever complaining about it, and he liked it. Used it to pull a 27-32' 5th wheel (had that long term parked in Nevada). Said it pulled the trailer well.

I rode in it a couple times. Seemed a little eager to downshift on a hill, even when empty. So much so that it would drop to 5th running at 70-75 where my 4spd Dodge would try to run up it in 4th pulling my 6k toyhauler. But I have noticed that my dad's '14 Cummins is a little quick to downshift as well, but not as bad as that Ford was.

Talk to Carl, Team Fred, I think that is what he is running these days...

I think my last one was a 92, if I remember correctly. Solid engine, not a seconds issue with it. I had to install two fuel pumps in it (one in each tank). Not a huge expense, and NAPA has a quality replacement that never let me down.

The sheet metal was thinner than I would like, the bed didn't fare too well on it. I wish I would have gone for a drop in liner instead of the spray on. The rear wheel wells were showing some signs of rust. I wouldn't call that unexpected though, since I think I washed it twice in a decade.

The clutch linkage bushings under the dash are all plastic, and a major PITA to replace. For this reason, I'd be wanting an auto in that era.

I think you're thinking 6.9L my friend. Those are referred to (by whippersnappers) as OBS now. (OBS to me means '61-66 or so?)

This is a newish ('11 to current) F*rd

Nope, I read it wrong. I was thinking the 7.5 (460 Gasser).

I assumed you had received enough diesel education in the past that you were surely looking at gassers. I guess not.... :D

:D

Just considering a 6.7L deezel. The right V10 and a commuter car are STRONG candidates with my JKU being the casualty. Looked at the 6.2L new gassers but just don't want to pay the $ for them.... Insane prices imho

I hear you, I paid more for my truck than I did my house.

There are some seriously nice old 3+3's on the net, if you're willing to pay the premium.

I got your 2002 7.3 CrewCab with all the options that is really clean. It has almost 300K miles but it is clean. It spent its day going back and forth to KS and IL. Its my FIL's who lives in St George. Some of the guys that stayed with me saw it and someone commented on how clean it was and I can't remember if it was Cheston or Chad (Glockman). Anyway, he is selling it. If interested, let me know.

I don't have much experience except a test drive and going off of what a tow truck driver told me. I personally wasn't all that impressed with the acceleration of the ford with the 6.7, not that you are looking for a fast truck and my comparison might have been a little tainted due to me going from my 6.4 that had way more hp and torque than a stock 6.7. I ended up with a cummins 6.7. The tow truck driver that picked up my old 6.4 (high pressure fuel pump went out) and took me to the ford dealer where I traded it in on my dodge, said he tows more fords than anything and he hasn't been impressed with the 6.7 ford. He said they have one for a tow truck and it has been in the shop more than on the road where his dodge had never given him any problems. Of course, with all, there are good and bad. Thats just my limited experience. I like the ford interior way better but feel my cab has more room, not a mega cab either, than a ford.

Good info! Thanks....It'll take a SWINGING deal to get me into another Dodge. I did notice that when I towed. I would have never bought a 5.2L ZJ due to my towing experiences but they are decent rigs for the most part.

The 6.7I Ford is still kind of a new beast. The engine was released in the 2011 model. This doesn't really give a lot of time to see how well the truck is gonna do for the long haul. 10 years or more anyways. The 6.7I Ford is only 5 years old. The only thing I have really heard is....... nothing. I haven't heard anything good or bad about them. The front end is still prone to death wobble but, any time you get that many moving parts to soften up the ride you are gonna get it. Around here I have seen a huge switch from Ford trucks to Dodge trucks. Lots of ranching around here and lots of oil fields up north. I have been seeing more and more Dodge trucks than Ford.

Its a mid year 2002 F250 CrewCab Lariat Shortbed. New starter, new batteries, new alternator. Oil leak from injector housing fixed. Regular oil changes with synthetic oil. 298,000 miles on the original motor and transmission. Tires are in great shape. My FIL is pretty picky about his stuff, it is in excellent shape.

You can tell old people drive this. That dash pad has been on it since day one and it has a kleenex box in the transmission hump

Hijack,

How much :D

I'm out as it's a shorted :D Nice truck, though. I want to find that truck in a longed (like the colors and everything :D). Looked at a pretty nice white 7.3L today. It's probably worth the asking price just trying to talk myself into it. Anyone want a deal on a locked JKU tonight :D

My '04 Cummins was a great engine wrapped in a craptastic truck. It'd take a GREAT deal for me to get into a Dodge again. It'll be even more difficult because I haven't even looked at one. ;) (my wife was pretty funny when that truck drove away with a new owner....she said she could see the relief in my face:ugh::rofl:)

A couple years ago I worked in the oil fields around Midland, Texas and 99% of our trucks were Fords. A bunch had the 6.7 and I thought they towed well. Never pulled over 10K with one however. I also thought the ride was very nice. If I get another truck. I've put very serious thought into an 08-10 with the 6.4. I know they have some issues like the 6.0 which I refuse to own. Not sure if 6.7 was cured or share any of those prior issues. By the way. I'm a diehard Dodge fan so the fact I'm considering a Ford is a feat in itself.

6.7 only shares "powerstroke" with the previous versions. CLEAN sheet of paper Ford design. I wonder if ANYTHING would interchange between the 6.7L and 6.4L? The 6.4L is a warmed over, somewhat fixed 6.0L with a bunch of other problem causing changes with it. I've not heard of any spectacular mileage claims with that engine along with it's inherent drawbacks. To me, a 6.0L or 6.4L truck is a great platform to swap a Common Rail Cummins in (however, I live in Davis County and just owning a diesel here is a pain in the ass---let alone a swapped motor from a Dodge to a Ford)
