Shannon is nether smooth or slow.:D He drives balls out, even over the top of competitors. He won.;):rofl:

Right, but the past two years he didn't finish and he has more money backing him than any other competitor, not to mention the most expensive parts.., he got lucky that nothing broke. Driving like a bull in a china shop is fun but it is not what wins races I second jasons statement, "slow is smooth, smooth is fast".

The official winner of the 2010 King of the Hammers is Loren Healey. ...

i think he knows what hes doing...

and didnt shannon win the first year also?

im just saying they probably know what there doing..

also if i had the sponsers and the money id probably drive to win.. its the freaking hammers your not going to win by taking it easy.. lots of guys drive slower and are happy just with finishing the race.. some want to win

You have to finish the race, If you want to win. Trust me if I were racing I would love to go balls to the walls the whole race but chances are good that my rig would explode, in desert racing that hardest part is keeping your rig together while going as fast as you can. I noticed Shannon seemed to be taking it much easier during koh than other races and even previous years, that shot of the gps I took was from someone finishing in the 20s with a top speed of well over 100, shannon told me after the race his top speed was under 95

yeah thats way slower than normal.. even last year he said he wasnt going to beat it to bad ..unless someone makes him then he will drive the wheels off it and thats when the fun starts.

or something along those lines

If you want to finish first, first you mush finish. Is the saying that comes to mind. I don't think you have to be slow to be smooth. Smooth is fast but, it is not necessary to be slow.

Shannon did break. He blew three tires and bent a rear driveshaft. Drove 35 mph for the last ten miles to finish.

Nobody has the perfect car yet. No one even knows what is the best car or the right combo. The new torchmate car was pretty sweet to see in real life but with them not testing much there were unable to finish due to cooling system issues and a broken shock. Racing is hard. Shannon does have the most money but money doesnt buy the podium..

Thats whats so awesome about the race just because you have the most expensive coolest car doesnt mean your going to win. Prep, good honest quality people on your team, time out testing, well build durable car, great support from sponsors and alot of luck wins races.. "It's going to take more than a 2-300,000 dollar car to win this race" Tracy Jordan. I dont agree with this because of the luck Lucas Murphy had at the Rauch Creek Qualifier. I dont wanna be rude but if you look at his car.... There isnt that much money in it.. Rob Maccachren said "There is hundreds of things in an offroad race that can get you, thousands of thinks here at King Of The Hammers that can get you, Big difference". I think Rob has more money than Shannon backing him up and he didnt finish in 2010. Brian Deegan didnt finish either and he has tons and tons of money rolling in his way.

Shannon has been doing this forever he is a hell of a guy (all the Campbells at that) but he is in it for the money. Iv asked him first hand. This year if some of you are unaware. He switched tire sponsors from BFGoodrich to Goodyear. When I asked him why he said "Its not the tires that win the race, Ill run the tires that pay me the most".

One day I hope I can top him but it takes lots and lots of time and experience as well as many mistakes along the way. I for sure dont know all the answers but thats just my own opinion. I love this Ultra4 sport and am continuing to make it my goal to make a career out of it like Shannon but its not easy. If it was everyone would be doing it.. I do hope more people try this series. Ya it takes some money but it takes more heart than anything.. You never know how well you'll do unless you try. I encourage everyone here on RME to at least attend the Ultra4 race in july out at the Miller MotorSports park.

The Ultra4 American Rocksports Challenge will invade the most cutting
edge motorsports park in the United States July 14-15 2011. This 511
acre campus is home to world class motorsports events and will now play
host to a new breed in Ultra4 racing. The 7 acre rock crawling facility
built in 2009 will be modified for intense racing action. Teams will
traverse the man made terrain in the fastest time possible. Two separate
qualifier tracks will be laid out through the man made surface and the
combined times will determine who advances to the main event. The main
event will combine the total area of the courses for a no holds barred
as-sault by the teams to see who can conquer the American Rocksports
Challenge and take home the first ARC Trophy. This event will be a timed
event. Additional features of the event include the ARC Cup. This
Charity Cart race will be held Friday July 15th at Miller motorsports
parks cart racing facility. A VIP Vendor/sponsor Dinner Friday evening
in Legends hall will include a tour of the facility including the Larry H
Miller Total Performance Museum. Saturday will feature an extensive
Vendor show and parking lot sale. Want to move unwanted items? This
event will be the place to do it. A 4-wheel drive based car show will
also be held on Saturday and plenty of onsite camping will be available.
The Miller Motorsports Off-road facility is laid out to allow great
spectator access.

Miller Motorsports park is located just 20 minutes from the Salt Lake
City Airport, we expect our co-branding with the park will yield an
exceptional first year turn out.

Well said Casey and I hope you can get your car to hold together next year. I could be wrong, but I think Tracy Jordan is saying that it takes more than an expensive car to win the race. It takes a great team, a great driver, and luck.

When I helped pit for Clay Egan a couple years ago, he did awesome. His car wasn't the best one there, but it did well. He finished back in the pack but was sidelined for well over an hour because of a roll in the sand. Other than that I'm thinking he would have been top 25. I believe there was a Formula Toy that finished in the top 10 last year.

FWIW, as far as 'slow is smooth and smooth is fast', some of you seem to be getting hung up on the 'slow' part of that saying; focus on the 'smooth is fast'. Be smooth, move fast; as in, getting to the finish line as soon as you can. With that, the focus is the finish line - not an average top speed. You are both fighting with, and working with time. Anything other than a forward progression, and time will be working against you. You cannot make forward progression without a lot of luck, but also smarts on how to run your vehicle in such a manner that it does not fall apart. Anyone can get taken out of a race, and that's why desert racing and now KOH is so awesome. It really is anyone's title for the taking.

.. I should add that I am by no means an expert on this, just picked up a few things from the desert races that Rob and I have done. Our first race out, most of the BOR guys actually had bets running that we didn't come back in one piece; that they'd have to come scrape us off the course after night fall. I can't even tell you how awesome the slaps on the back, the 'great job guys', and the hand shakes were after we crossed the finish line under a single dangling headlight. Finishing is the #1 goal, finishing first would be an added bonus for most. ;)

That is exaclty right!! You never know who will win. Look at Loren Healy. His 2010 year was a great year and this year he didnt even finish KOH. Its lots of luck and will power to go faast when needed and take it slow were needed. Loren is also a hell of a guy. These racers are great people and would love to take time and talk to anyone about this sport and there career.

^ And it's addicting as hell. I have no doubt that you are hell bent on making a career of it Casey; you are in a good position to work hard at it and obtain it. Crossing that finish line is an indescribable high, even if you came in last IMO. When you consider everything that can/will be working against your goal/desire to cross that finish line,it'll blow your mind and give you a great feeling of accomplishment.. Even if it was a good dose of dumb luck, some eager and motivating crew members & friends, and more luck that got you to the finish...

... I want to go race again. :(

Thanks man. I appreciate it but Im speaking out of love for this sport and the people involved. Ill hit ya up next time Im in moab. Im heading to the RME BBQ and Easter Jeep Safari.

Let me tell ya a story about my first Ultra4 event. My first race was the Reno Stampede and let me tell ya I went down with the intent to watch not to race. It started with a phone call to Jeff Knoll. I asked him if I was to bring my car down if he would be willing to tech inspect it. He told me ya. So I hauled it down with the intent to just tech. I knew I had things to fix to pass but wanted a first hand look at it. Cause to be honest I was a little intimidated by those guys. I came to realize very fast that they were great guys and were more than happy to help with anything I needed. The night we arrived we went down to the casino and ran into nick and shannon campbell. They asked if I had brought my car and if I was going to race. I explained to them I was down to prep for the next race. The first thing nick said to me after that comment was, "If you brought your car your racing. Ill go talk to Jeff and Dave right now and let them know the Campbells say your in". So the next day we showed up at the track, jeff looked over my car with nick looking over his shoulder. Jeff kept saying well this needs and this needs and nick said fixed fixed and fixed. The biggest thing we needed was a rear firewall to race and some rear lights. He would let everything else slide this race. So we headed to Torchmate in hopes that Bill Kunz would help us out. There place is located 30 min from the track. When we showed up to Torchmate Bill was there to greet us at the door with a smile on his face. "I just talked to Jeff, lets unload your car and get it ready to race tomorrow". I thanked him a ton and unloaded my car and drove it into his shop. We spent a total of about six hours there fabricating an aluminum firewall for the rear of my car. He pulled his guys off paying jobs and had them help us out for the rest of the day. I had Chad Schoonover with me and we kept looking at each other saying "Is this reallly happening". We were just in amazement that Bill would do that for us. After completing the firewall. I tried to pay him for his time and metal but he said not to worry about it he was happy to help. I cant tell ya how much that means to a guy trying to get into this sport. That night chad and I stayed up till about four in the morning wiring brake lights, amber lights and horns to pass. We got little sleep but in the end it was one hell of an adventure and Iv been hooked ever since. When I watched the Stampede video in my earlier post and seen us drive thru the silt bed, it made me just smile... I plan on hitting all the Ultra4 series events this year. Ill try my best and have the most fun I can. After all thats what its all about!!:D:D
