Lewis Lodge

Spent the weekend camping on Elk Ridge and prowling around up there, North Long Point and Beef Basin, with the obligatory Abajo's scenic drive heading out yesterday morning. Took a short side trip to visit the Lewis Lodge ruins. They are really cool group of ruins perched on a ledge in a tributary to Arch canyon with sheer cliff face above and below.

The ruins are spread out along that ledge across from my buddy Tim. There are ruins all along it, from the left edge of the picture all the way to the right.

Wow. Amazing. Can one of you history buffs tell me why they would build those homes there? Was the water at that level when they were built? Was it for protection from animals, and persons? How many children died from falling off?

Dave,

You need to be making money on your photos...
These (and your others) are just stunning.
I must say though, those heights still give me the hebejebes, the self preservation gene is alive and very well in my dna...

Dave, my dad has a bull elk tag in that area. How are the bulls looking?

Let's just say I wish I was your Dad .

They weren't hanging around to let me take pictures of them, but I saw a lot of NICE bulls. This time of year they still like to hang out together so I was seeing them in groups. One group in particular, of about 10 bull elk, there were three or four REALLY NICE ones in that bunch. Saw a couple other big ones besides those. Lot of small bulls running with them too.

Would LOVE to have that tag!

Don't know if they'll still be hanging in the same area by then or not, but be glad to pin point exactly where I was seeing them a few days ago. I'll try and get some actual GPS coords and PM them to you later.

Me and Tim were talking about how cool it would be to head up there in Sep. just to hear them screaming and watch them tearing things up. That is going to be a really special hunt!

You know, heights bother me too. Not exactly a phobia, but definitely, I am not comfortable with them. But this spot, I don't know, the climb down and back up didn't seem like anything to me, no danger. But Tim wouldn't do it - he stayed up on the rim. And I know a couple of other people who have been there and told me they weren't willing to make the scramble onto that ledge either. All a matter of degrees I guess...
