Here's a project I worked on today instead of actual work. My garage where I park my rig is detached so when I want to remote start my rig, the garage door stays closed and it's just not a good scene.... lame. I decided to modify my garage door opener so I can connect it to the aux out on the remote starter.

The pics are bad because the lighting in my office is bad... they say that it keeps me humble. In the fist pic, you can see I soldered two wires on the open side of the push button:

On the other side of the board you can see the button in the middle

I used mad skillz to drill a hole in the side of the case. Electronics were removed.

As you can see, when I short the two wires together, the remote transmits (by the LED lighting).

In my case, I connected the two wires to a relay so when the aux wire on my RS grounds, it shorts the wires and the opener transmits. The remote itself still functions as it always had. You could remove the 12V Batt, tape the button down and send power to the batt terminals but it wouldn't function in any other way.

This project is also useful for anyone who doesn't want a whale-d*k remote on their visor and wants to hide it away from thieves or for cosmetics. You can just add a momentary switch somewhere handy.

Enjoy.

1 - that's not sexy
B - you missed the point
# - why bother with those stupid universal remotes when 4 different ones work just as well?

The best part is it worked awesome! Since my garage is out of my LOS, my two-way remote tells me that my rig is running and the door is open... I'm very impressed with myself.

Hey JL who do you use for electrical parts supply, such as wire, quick-disconnects etc. I'm not wanting to use HF crap on my jeep :D

S&H Terminal supplies our electrical connectors, screws, bolts, etc. If you have a business license and have an account, you can buy good quality connectors by the 100pc bag from Mountain West Distributors. As a regular dude, you could buy some from a car audio store, they'll have the same connectors MWD sells I am sure.

I know what you mean though, the connectors with the hard plastic shells are asstastic. Generally speaking, the terminals with the translucent cases are the good ones but I don't think that they sell them at the HF.

I use the connectors that dont have insulation on them and then just heat shrink over them. Makes for alot cleaner install

Why bother then? Just solder and heat shrink, it would be a better electrical connection if you're going through the effort.

This thread is getting off track, it's supposed to be about my badassedness.

I like your thinking. I will take your word that you are some bad ass. Funny how we can always remember the best and the worst ass we ever had. Atleast your man enough to admit it

On Topic of the thread, two things:

1- nice thinking
2- I think there was a myth busters about committing suicide using the exhaust from your car, they came to the conclusion that modern cars don't put off enough CO to kill any healthy person.

What's considered modern? My Runner is a '97 and the exhaust can make your eyes bleed.
