Are they legal to use as a parking break? Meaning, if you don't have an actual parking brake, and install one of these to use as a parking brake, will your rig pass inspection?

I'm thinking about going this route for a parking brake than actually getting parking brake style brakes in the rear...

technically no they are not legal. Your emergency brake is supposed to be a seperate system (i.e. your brakes are hydraulic, your emergency is mechanical). You could however probably rig something up to fool the inspector unless he climbs unde your rig and visually checks out your e-brake setup.

this has worked for me so far.... my cable is tied to a cross-member in the rear, so if you pull the p-brake it feels like it's engaging and the light comes on.

i need to get a rear p-brake though:(

I used line locks on my last buggy and wouldn't run them again. They just didn't hold. It could have been the weight of 40" tires, but I didn't like them.

Well, with a stick, it's nice to have a parking brake. E brakes won't stop a vehicle anyway, it might slow it down and that's it. The new brake systems they come out with now days never fail - when under good maintenance! Even if you bust a line or blow a caliper, you still have brakes. The e brake was brought out when they used single reservoir master cylinders and no proportioning valve. Now they have both.

...But alas, still need to be legal if I ever do have to pass a safety inspection again....

On how much of an incline?? You'd think under 15* they would do fine..Whis is about all a parking brake will work for. No?

I am not totally sure. They are an Eldorado from the 70's IIRC.

Is this them?

They are from a 78 Cadi Eldo... And aren't too expensive if so....$100-120 for both?

Cost is ALWAYS a factor :D

What year were they and I'll look? Mostly because I was just going to run 1/2 ton GM front, front and rear....

'78 Eldorado

They are around $300 for a pair unless you have a core, then they are about the same as rebuilt half ton calipers.
