I am keeping my eye out for front (and maybe rear) D60s

is there a compiled list somewhere of which year/make/models got the D60? so maybe as I am junkyard hunting/classifieds hunting I can find some easier

Front 60s:

One ton fords from 78-1998

One ton chevys from 73-92ish

One ton and 3/4 ton dodges from 88-93 check carefully some came with dana 61s

Also you will not find a front 60 at the junkyard........

Rear 60s came in a ton of stuff and can be had on KSL for around 100 bucks

I was torn between going 14 bolt, or 60 on the rear, but I have gears that would work with a rear 60, and I already have a d44 up front that could get me by until I happen into a d60 front

for $100.00 i'd be all over a d60 rear. Or am I on crack for considering a d60 rear over a 14 bolt?

If you are running 37s or smaller run the 60 or make sure you shave the 14 bolt the 14 bolt is pure beef just not great ground clearance

I agree SKIPPY, but I have a 12-bolt on the rear. which does provide nice ground clearance. but isn't a floater, and is a bit on the weak side

the D44 front, i'm not so worried about (but if I found one, I would run it for sure)

and I already have matching gears for a 60 that a member here gave me for free. for $100.00 for a diff, another $100 for a spool...... and for essentially $200 I upgraded my rear (minus driveshaft changes of course, and brake lines etc.)

That stock rear 60 will have 30 spline shafts, so along with your 35 spline spool budget for new shafts too. And then budget to have the spindles bored out to fit those shafts, since they most likely won't fit.

Yeah, probably. There is a reason every cheap budget includes a 14 bolt--they just have the beef you need, without needing much upgrading. The same logic would apply to a D70 also.

yeah, the original plan at first was to do a 14/60 eventually, and you probably have a good idea on who I would have put the gears in ; )

I didn't know that the 60 rear needed so much to work.

the simplest would be if I could find a GM D60 front because it would already have the leaf-spring perches in the right place and everything.
the same is true for a 14-bolt rear, but rear perches are so much easier to move because the perch isn't cast into the housing like the gm fronts are

My buddies dad bought a Dana 60 for $100 thinking it was a great deal, that he found out later that it came with 19 spline little puny shafts and he had to bore out the spindles too.

Even worse--the ones with 19 spline shafts used different spindles, that cannot be bored large enough for 35 spline shaft to fit through.

'80-85 Ford 1 tons have TTB Dana 50's. Forget about these if you see one advertised.

Early Dodge kingpin Dana 60's have external locking hubs. 35 spline hubs or slugs are not readily available, and you will want to upgrade because the stock 30 spline outers are not much stronger than Dana 44 shafts. Factor in extra money for aftermarket internal spline hubs if you get an external hub Dodge.

The outer knuckles on Ford high pinion king pin axles are too weak for high steer arms. Ford used crossover steering so saved money by using a thinner knuckle. GM and Dodge used along-the-frame steering so needed beefier castings. Dodge and GM castings hold up to high steer pretty good.

Almost every full floater Dana 60 will have small shafts and will need to have the spindles bored larger for 35 spline shafts. You need 35 spline shafts; otherwise, the 60 is not much stronger than the 44 or Ford 8.8 or GM 10/12 bolt. But once upgraded, the 60 is strong enough for most people. Only the biggest/baddest rigs need the larger ring gears and housings of the 70/80's and 14 bolts.

I'm running a Dana 60 rear out of a 99 e350 super duty van. Big 3 5/8" ish tubes, smooth bottom, factory disc brakes, and spindles that accept 35 spline shafts with no modification. Pretty sweet axle I picked up on a half off sale at picknpull for $45.
