I know that the 1980 F350 had the TTB, but I thought that they went back to the solid axle 60 in '81 for the F350.

Wikipedia says the D60 was a mid-year change in 1985.

Is there any love for the F*rd 9.75 rear axle? There are billions of them in Expy's and F150 Stupercrews out there.

I wouldn't think there's much wrong with them, but they're semi-float, aren't they? Also, not 8 lug like the rest of the axles mentioned here.

I believe that's correct. Also, the 85+ Ford 60s will have the perch integrated in the the pumpkin without much tube on the driver side. Not sure if you remember Carl, but when you built my suspension on my buggy, you had to mill the misalignment spacers so it could fit in the space that was there. The preferable 60s are the 78-79 if you can find them...they give you more tube to work with.

I'm thinking all 8 lug Fords 97+ are metric. Don't know for sure.

Anyways that Ford van metric 60 rear would be great to pair with a metric ball joint 60 front. I think that setup would be very cost-effective.

So my Googling just now says all the vans were 8x6.5" through 2007 at least. (same wheels 1992-2007) So if you have a metric front, you're probably stuck with a Sterling rear. (which isn't so bad either)

Along the same theme, what do people think about the Chrysler 9 1/4? It seems like a good fit to swap into Jeeps, but I've never seen it done. It's a better axle than a Ford 8.8 and Dana 44 and 30 spline Dana 60. Decent sized R&P. Big housing and tubes. 31 spline C clip shafts. Decent aftermarket support -- not great but good enough I think. 70's and early 80's 1/2 trucks and ramchargers had 5 on 4.5 bolt pattern. Later models used 5 on 5.5. WMS for these axles is 64". It was also used under later models trucks and even the Durango. I don't know any specifics about these later axles though.

P.S. The carrier bearings use adjuster nuts not shims so easy to setup.

Guy at WOTR had a track/kick with a 60 front and 9.25 rear. It was sweet. Since I'm a fan of the chryco 8.25 I like the 9.25 by default and I do have one after all.

Yeah STOCK REAR dana 60's kind of suck, you really might as well go with a d44, ford 8.8 or something. We had 12 bronco's in moab one time and two guys had rear 60's, they broke 3 shafts in the time the rest of us ( 14 bolt's and ford 10.25's) broke no shafts. (they were used to it and carried spare shafts)

They can be made into great axle's but they time and money you are better off with gm 14 bolt, the big lip can be ground off so you don't need to "shave" it to get some more clearance. Plus with a 14 bolt detroits are really a lunch-box locker and really cheap.

I have seen ford front dana 60's in junk yards, but not very often, it was a few years ago when the economy was really bad and no one was wheeling.

Probably a bit harder these days but sometimes you could come up with a matched pair of CUCV axles, d60/gm 14 bolt, both with detriots and matching gears. (I could be wrong but I think that, not all CUCV's had detroits in the front but I am pretty sure they all got detriots in the rear)

The outer knuckles on Ford high pinion king pin axles are too weak for high steer arms. Ford used crossover steering so saved money by using a thinner knuckle.
Not exactly true. Been running high steer arms on both my rigs; YJ on 38s and Frontier on 37s no issues. I have heard the Ford knuckle is somewhat weaker than the others though.

The 14bolt is far from ideal. My pal spun the tubes on his with a 4 banger and auto trans. at least weld the tubes to the chunk. And the 60 can be upgraded with aftermarket 30 spline allow shafts (which is what I did for mine). yeah the stock shafts are junk and will break. Wish I'd taken my pals advice and put in 35 spline shafts and bored the spindles from the start.

I've seen 3 Fords break the top hat off and no GM/Dodges. The breaks were all on rigs running 40"+ tires and more weight than a YJ or Frontier.

I've also heard about 14B's spinning tubes. It's good to know that it is a potential weak point. I'll be welding them up if/when I run across one again.

Hey Rondo. Have I ever seen you on the Boise trails?

What do people think of the chromo 30 spline D60 shafts? I know they are popular but have not heard much information for or against them.

Waste of money in my opinion. They may be stronger than stockers, but they still break like they're made of cheese.

There is a list somewhere of 60 rears that have the larger spindles that don't require boring to fit 35 spline shafts. Many of the later vans had big spindles. Mine are bored. It's really not hard to do.
