Local help?

Im new to this hobby and was refered by some locals about this forum. I have a 1988 Jeep Wrangler and have been wanting to build it up a little bit.
Im new to the area and not real sure about how to get started. Some friends of mine have reffered me to a couple places for resources but I figured I would start here. Is there any good shops in town that knows what they are talking about? Or should I look into a local offroading club?

I haven't had any work done by them but sexton off road and Ufab seem like quality shop and pretty straight forward.

Where are you located? That will be the biggest factor.

One voice of warning. Beware of advanced 4 wheel drive in Salt Lake. Pretty serious crooks. If you are bored search the name see their history.

Welcome to the board.

My advice, get out and wheel your jeep as-is, if you need to upgrade things, you'll quickly identify what those things are. then go to one of the shops mentioned to either buy those parts or to have them fabricated.

Agreed! Your jeep is already good to go have some fun in. Get in it, drive it, get it stuck, self recover it, repeat. Once you learn that thing inside out and know it's limits, then start modifying to "up" the limits so you know exactly what you want and what you are getting into. Maybe I'm a little biased because that's how I started out but I feel it's the best and the most fun way to get into it. :D

RME is kind of a seudo club, more of community and tech/trail talk board. Search our archives and ask questions. We have a lot of people here to help set you on the right track.

Also find a club that's close to you and one that shares your interests and get involved! Maybe we need a list of active clubs here in the state? Didn't we have one at some point?

That's be nice to have a sticky where the clubs could post up trips and get together and things of the sort. Kinda like the upcoming wheeling trips section but for different clubs to post their stuff.

Like the club idea. I just got invited on a run with Big Horn out of Ogden and didn't even know they existed.

Again for the wheel what you've got. I started this sport in a bone stock TJ and really learned a lot just wheeling it as it was. I think you will be surprised with the places your YJ will take you as it sits.

Thanks guys looks like I have some wheeling to do first. I know I need some disconnects and need the vaccum disconnect serviced. Is there any one in the Salt Lake valley that can look at it?

you will also find out that you are really going to get to know your jeep parts well. It's going to make you bankrupt if you try to pay for someone to fix everything for you.
Google has all the answers you will ever need to fix anything on any vehicle, especially jeeps. Find the problems and fix them yourself. It will save you thousands of $$$
AND, even if you can afford to pay for all your parts to be fixed, Money doesn't help when you're miles and miles from anyone, and you don't have phone service. Knowledge of your vehicle is a must.

are you interested in learning how to fix your jeep yourself Chucky? If so, you're in the right place. RME4x4.com plus google equal lots of great answers. Maybe you could post up the issues you're having with your vacuum disconnect and we can give you some ideas of how to fix it.

I always just used to lock the front engagement collar with a hose clamp and let the front "free wheel" when not in 4wd... most economical way I've see to fix it.

Great minds think alike. Or maybe just Jeep minds I don't know.

CHUCKYD, the cable disconnect is something you can do with minimal tools on a Saturday, invite a friend over and knock it out. Even just doing the little things yourself is very fufilling and helps to teach you things you NEED to know about your rig.
