Anyone extended their drive shafts? I'm guess'n so, but just curious how you went about doing it. Got a friend who asked me about it, and he was just thinking of adding some tube to it and reinforce it, but is it worth it? will it work?

I think Six States charges about $50-60 to retube a Driveshaft.

The last time I had mine done, they used the thickest wall tubing they could. :D

Ya, I agree, that's what I said. I told him even if you weld a tube on it, is it gonna turn right? I was just curious if anyone has ever tried it.

It's actually really easy to retube the shaft by yourself, it's just the balancing part that is impossible without the right equip.

I am sure he can do it, and I am sure it will work great until he gets out of the neighborhood. Then it will be interesting if the u-joints blow out before or after he ruins the output shaft bearings.  :D

They just quoted me $150 to re-tube mine. I ground the welds off and picked up a piece of DOM .250 wall and did it myself. I had to press the tube onto the yolks so its pretty straight (not balanced) but I don't drive it on the street. The DOM was an odd size and pretty pricey. ($87 for 25 1/4 inch piece) but I wanted an exact fit. My old one was double thick, but it was pretty bent. I dont think this will bend. If you drive it on the street I'd have a shop do it.

I'm with Muley. I lengthened my front DL and it worked out great. I sleeved the inside of it, cut a 1" extension piece, slipped it on, then slipped the other end back on and welded it up. I made one goof, forgot to check to be sure both ends were in line before welding (duh). I would do it again.

Front or rear shaft?

Lots of people build their own fronts where balancing isn't "as" important... if he is a good welder and has the proper tools, it can be done... He can also take it to a DL shop and have them balance it...

Driveshafts of Utah in Murray does a good job, I use them alot becasue they are quick and good priced. Six States has been doing it forever and makes kigh quality stuff (my long-travel front is from there)

The shaft I lengthened is a front shaft so it doesn't matter if it is balanced or not. However with the two ends out of sync yes it vibrates at certain speeds. (Once I accidentally had it in 4wd high without knowing it, felt the vibes).
