Wow... this is like a religious debate!

How upgradeable are the mac laptops? Are you stuck with a closed system on those? I obviously don't deal with macs very often.

they are about as upgradeable as any laptop...Hard drive and memory are fairly simple. If you really find it necessary most the other parts are upgradeable as well (proc if a faster one is avaialble, etc). Majority of the time though you rarely hear of anyone swapping anything on the mac laptops.

oooh ouch I call called a kid by a zealot

No my PII did not come with firewire but for $6.99 I can add it in a couple minutes... but why in the hell would I want to do video on an 8 year old machine? You must like taking naps. As for the rest of the stuff you droned on about, yes it will do all of that but again wtf would I want to do all that on an 8 year old machine, I guess it gives you time to go out and work a second job to pay for Mac hardware.

I'm a die hard PC guy... and those new mac commercials are really really stupid. :p

But besides that Greg, I think you would enjoy a Mac book.

Major upgrade parts tend to be a little more pricy because of some compatibility issues (not really issues just the manufacturer has to provide mac drivers for the hardware) and most take rather specific memory. Some of the new mac laptops come with mini sata2 drives close to a 3 gbps bus on them they run like a cat with it's tail on fire.

I tend to walk the line that if the shoe fits, wear it. I'm pretty strict on FreeBSD for servers that see the real world. Macs for web development mostly because you can install perl, tomcat, postgres,mono,db40 or whatever else you want with the latest bsd ports and still have an easy to use gui to manage everything. I've been running Mac OSX on my p4 for about a year now. I used to hate it, but I've warmed to it after a while.
and xp for general users.

Seems like we have two entirely different trains of thoughts here.

The "Get it cheep, mod the hell of of it and keep it running" train. (Somewhat like my jeep) :)

and

The "Get it loaded, pay a little more, and know it will work" train. (A nice rubi unlimited)

Get a PC if you like to work on it like a project.
Get a Mac if you like to work on projects with it.

There is not a right answer, but there is a less frustrating one. :p

IMO your logic is wrong here as well. :p

I don't buy any of my pc's cheap. I think that is the probably the #1 reason many pc's get a bad rap. So many of them are sold with cheap components. There are plenty of high quality components out there for pcs, you just have pay a little more for them just like the mac hardware.

And yes, Mac hardware fails too... I've seen in plenty of times. :D

considering Mac hardware is the exact same as PC hardware I would deffinitely agree :D Macs are just picky about what specifically goes into them and what works with the OS and what doesn't.

Pay a little more get a lot more. I agree you can get a quality pc. But would you not agree Mac has a higher standard to begin with?

There is something to be said about companies that control the hardware and the software or in my case manufacturing and installation, when you control how things integrate at a closer level things tend to turn out much better.

All I know is from my own experience. The PC's we have in the office have problems on a pretty regular basis. The PC's use the same exact database program, the same release of office etc essentially the same stuff... We use a mac server because we have not had an issue, ever. The pc server we had formerly crashed more than once and it took a great deal of effort to recover information.
blah blah blah.... I am a mac geek and even I am getting board with all of this.

What exactly are you trying to do with the computer?

I do freelance design, photography, database design and some basic web stuff. For these the mac has a faster workflow.

And besides all of this Bill has enough money, come join the resistance! ;)

Same here. I do graphic design for a living, 3D renderings, and web development... on a PC. How is the workflow faster on a mac?

I personally don't think one OS does things better than another anymore. It's more or less all about user interface now. Do you like the white shiney gui of the mac, or do you go with the playskool look of XP? I personally change the look of xp quite a bit, so you can't claim that mac is better just because it looks better. :)

Well, I ordered my laptop.... I got a Dell. :-\ I really wanted a Mac, but due to finiances the Dell was eaiser/cheaper to get. I still want a Mac, but it'll have to be in the future. Here's what I ended up with-

e1705_front_131x145_ss.jpg

Inspiron E1705- Intel® Core™ Duo Processor T2300E (1.66GHz/667MHz FSB)

LCD Panel- 17 inch Wide Screen XGA+ Display

Memory- 512MB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHz

Video Card- Integrated Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 950

Hard Drive- 100GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive

Combo/DVD+RW Drives- 24X CD Burner/DVD Combo Drive

Wireless Networking Cards- Intel PRO/Wireless 3945 802.11a/g Mini Card (54Mbps)

I found a coupon for 30% off for orders over $999, which was better than the 20% off Dell was currently offering. I think I came out pretty good.

I have the same laptop, except 15". It's a great laptop. ;)

When you get a chance, upgrade to more memory though.

You're gunna want some more RAM... 512 is anoying on Windows XP.... what battery life are they claiming?

I know where to get some, remember I worked for Micron... http://www.crucial.com/ :D

2.5 hrs with the 6 cell battery... pretty short, but for my uses I'll have an outlet nearby most of the time.

It'll work for my needs.
