ok heres the thing, when i was in high school i was into racing and i had a 94 Z28, well i ended up pulling the motor and i am rebuilding it and making it a 383. now i have a 4runner and kinda falling away from the racing thing and getting into wheeling. my question is how hard would this swap be and would the stock toyota drive train handle a 500 HP motor or not? i want to do a SAS to what axle would hold up to the motor. thank you

Plan on replacing everything Toyota in the drivetrain...and having headaches fitting enough cooling in there. Other than that, it'd make for a fun rig!

I'm no expert but I'd say get a TH400 trans and a Dana 300 transfer case. And Dana 60's front and rear. I have a buddy that has a Dana 300 and two Dana 60's for sale.

P.s. "legally" you can't use your 383 engine and keep it street legal. Engine swaps need to be by the same manufacturer, and same year or newer than your vehicles body. So you can't legally put it in because its older and its by Chevy. So it would fail inspection to get it street legal.

There's loopholes to everything but death. And tires sticking out varies by whether its single or dually hubs and also wheel offset.

and also they are the same year my 4runner and camaro both 94's

Whoops I missed that part ha.

I had an 81' toy pickup we put a 350 in and it wasn't all that bad. We went with the 700r tranny. Still running stock axles and holding up for 8 years now. Cooling was a pain along with closing the hood.

I like the idea...
As for axle strength power isn't the major concern. Tire size/weight, and hopping vehicles are what break axles. My turbo 383 LT1 in my daily driver 95 Camaro is currently making around 650hp (still working out some power issues), and it has the stock 10bolt axle . Here's my build thread if you're interested http://www.camaroz28.com/forums/showthread.php?t=768907 I'm your guy for LT1 tuning btw.

As for the toyota transmission/tcase I don't know since I'm not familiar with them. It would be best if you could stick with a GM transmission that is known to hold up fairly well.

your build thread is sick that makes me want to finish my Z, i want to stick with around a 33 or 34 not to big. i want to work more on flexing rather then big tires. i hate bouncing and hoping and all that so im not to worried about, and the tranny and ether want to stick with the stock tranny 4L60E witch comes in the Z, it is bran knew just spent 2000 on it. shift kit and all. or i want the 6 speed out of a camaro.

street legal

Engine swap.. Utah state inspection is not the problem being legal. It is the emissions tests. I did a 2004 5.3 Chev swap in my 91 Jeep YJ. Called the state emissions center and they said it doesn't have to be the same manufacturer of the engine, but same year or newer, and that the vehicle must pass emissions requirements for the motor itself. The emissions test must be done at the state center. My 5.3 blows much cleaner than the 4.0 that originally came with the jeep, that is their main concern. You could also register the vehicle in a county that does not require emissions. But there different answers, depending on who you talk to. If you decide to have the state do the emissions, they will pick it apart.

On the swap, you will need to run all the emission equip that came on the motor from the donor car. Fuel return, charcoal canister, any vaccum lines to sensors and such. I put a 383 into a 83 toy pu. We used a th350 and 205. This was back in 87 or 88. was a pain with the cooling, but it was fun. Good luck.

Emissions is not the problem

If you are going to run full width axles thats the problem unless you cut the axles down or run some serious backspacing on your wheels. I have done this swap my tires stick out 10" past the fenders.

ya im not going to do the full width axle. hell no. it would look sweet but i wouldnt be able to drive anywhere. and its my daily driver. im just going to run the stock axle and run the 4L60E out of my camaro and all that. now i all i need is to buy the intake manifold, throttle body, injecters, and all the sparkplugs, wires, and cap and rotor then i can start putting it in the runner. wish it was as easey as that;)
