lunchbox, Detroit, or selectable????

The Detroit in my newly-trailable 14bolt gives me the giggles. I'd like something for the front now, ASAP.

I'm planning on running flanges because I hate jumping in and out. And because I've managed to grenade hubs on the crewcab and I have no faith in them. :D

So. For a daily-driven, will-be-driven-to-and-from-all-trails-I-have-the-balls-and-clearance-for Blazer, which might run 38's at some point but is on 315's right now, would a lunchbox locker suffice??? Or should I pony up for a Detroit?

Or do those options suck enough to justify a selectable, likely an ARB????

I'm thinking a Detroit might be nice since it would allow some differential action w/no power to the front shaft..... ????

what say ye? I'm locker-crazy right now.

I've driven Jeeps with Lunch Boxes up front on the road, and you can't even tell they're in there (cept for the clicking when turning). Down side, your turning when in 4WD will suffer compared to a selectable. For the cost, and simplicity, I'd go lunchbox anyday over a selectable.

Then again, both mine are selectable. :D

I'd love an ARB up front, but that buys a lot of gas these days.

So you would prefer lunchbox over a Detroit? Just for the cost/installation factor? or a functional reason? I liked the one in my M725 ok. Got me into a couple places you shouldn't really be in an 8' tall AMBULANCE!!!! lol

Do whatever you can get a screaming deal on. ;) Ideally, I'd do a Detroit, if you're going to be setting up gears anyway. If you've already got the gears set up you'd save a bunch by just throwing a lunchbox in it. Do they make an Aussie locker for a 60? I don't think anyone has made a selectable locker that is reliable and strong enough for a Dana 60 yet.

Kurt's gonna yell at you for that. :D

I don't know if they sell an Aussie locker for a 60...

I'm leaning towards lunchbox at the moment, all things considered.

Can't even compare the two. I'd go Detroit over any lunchbox. If you want quick and ez, then the lunchbox is the way to go. If you're doing gears or any other work in there, then the Detroit is the only way to go. Oh, and I'd take a lunch box over an ARB any day as well.

(Kurt's gonna kill me for that)

I'm pleased with my Dana 60 ARB... :greg: I believe Aussie does make a locker for the 60... that's what I'd do if I were you. Luckily, I'm not. :p

I am very pleased with the lock right that I have in the buggy. First off... It is huuuuge compared to the toyota ones that I am used to (i know....captain obvious) But it has held up great, no issues at all when I snapped a long side shaft on RK. That and wayne got me a great price shipped to my door. :greg:

Kurt and I agree to disagree on ARBs. I've had Dana 30, 35, 44, and 60 ARBs, and had problems with every single one of them. They are just far too complicated to be reliable. The Toyota electric lockers seem to be reliable and strong. I wish they made those for Dana 60s.

after sheering two sets of pins in the lockrite I gave that up and got smart.

Detroit,

just don't break a shaft....

my $0.02...
#1 detroit (awesome strength and reliability)
#2 Lunchbox (i've ran them for years with pretty favorable results)
#3 ARB (strong, but I've seen too many failures as Rockmonkey mentions)

At the end of the day, lockers rock!

And yet I find them amazingly simple. And they are getting "simpler" with each upgrade (such as timed gears now). Their new line of compressors is stellar, their new bulkhead and o-ring designs are better (that said I had great results with the older style too).

The irony in that is the LC guys that really whale on their rigs (read heavy 80's with the OE e-lockers) actually pull them and go with ARB's for the upgaded strength and reliability. Carl can detail the somewhat common effects of a broken axle in an e-locker equipped rig.

I've revised my ARB motto. Toyota ARB's are second to none when it comes to locker selection. That and the installers I've always used have provided flawless results. Literally. :p

In my experience with ARBs, I'd buy one again. I've got a friend with an issue in his old style 9". I've never had issues with the solenoids, air lines or anything in my XJ.

Now that I run a spool, I'd MUCH rather have a selectable in the rear. It'll probably happen, but not right away. It'll likely be an ARB as well.
