Yeah, get the full-manual w/ engine braking, reverse shift pattern. I built a TH350 like that and it was an awesome transmission. I didn't do the reverse manual shift pattern and was kicking myself later on.

I definitely recommend getting the engine braking. I had a reverse valve body for my 700R4 WITHOUT the engine braking and I hated it on the trail.

It will make an auto behave like a manual when you let off the throttle... provides engine braking.
You know the hill in Area BFE that drops down into the exit for the old Lower Helldorado? The steep, ledge-filled, loose one? My TJ would creep down that hill without me needing to touch the brakes.

But stuck more often.
As I recall it will lock the converter so it would be just like you had a manual tranny in say first gear when going down a hill. I could be way off though. The reverse would be nice as well. Nice to have first gear close to reverse. Although IIRC, you will need to cut or modify one of the gates in that shifer so you have direct access from 1st to reverse.

I need to double check but I think I have my old Th400 rev man valve body. It is an Art carr with just a couple trail miles on it.

Well, that doesn't sound too bad. That was my main question, if a garage mechanic could do it, or you had to take it to a shop.
Very cool, but I think Art Carr has a similar one. I can't find a picture of it, but on their Ebay page, it says,Or you can buy a shifter with one of these gates.

I was going to say to cut out the gate between 1st and reverse if the shifter you get has it.
This is the result of a gated shifter on rockpile...turn the sound up and you can hear him hitting the gates while he cant get to reverse fast enough.(beware.... some brief adult language)

Just cut out the tab between first and reverse on a reverse pattern Art Carr. It's the same thing. That's what I did.

For sure. I'd take Winters anyday anyways.
Not quite the same thing, but that mod does work just fine.
FYI, you can order just the gate from winters.
FYI part 2, you can order reverse pattern stickers from winters / art carr if you want to mod your gate like rockdog did yet have it show the proper gear position.
