Manual vs. Automatic

If I end up having to keep my Jeep, I think that something needs to be done in the tranny department.

This is what I was thinking, Replace the clutch on my current tranny and install a 4-to-1 in the t-case.

Or find a suitable automatic to put in.

What I want is more control on the trail, I am sick of having to ride the clutch and bouncing trough all the rocks.

What are your thoughts?

i'd do lower in the case and not touch auto.......

i have wheeled in auto, and to me, it seems like it's not that big of a challenge. i like having the clutch to worry about, to add to the chaos and confusion........

lower case gears are nice to have!

I like the auto because of the control that you get when you are in the rough stuff. One other concern that I have is on the street. I know that the auto will suck some power, but I plan on putting 44's with 5.13's, on pokey.

Britney's 2 cents is ......... Do the auto cause driving on the trail with a manual is scary, especially when you kill it climbing a big hill on Hell's Revenge. (Not that I've done that before:rolleyes: )

Too much to think about at the same time ..... Clutch, shift, brake, gas, locker, little to the left, etc. etc. AAAAHHHHHH!!

I have all the control I need. I wanted an auto until I installed the 4:1 gears. Now I run 122:1 and can climb straight up a wall with out touching the gas.

I love it :)

There is just something about Krawling that just gets ya..:p

See I don't think that I would go that low, just because I like to play in other places that require "some" speed. And 4hi with 4 popper is useless!

See that is exactly why I like having the manual. I had a Disco II stall out on me on the REALLY steep loop on Poison Spider(the one on the right, before the waterfall) and when the motor died I lost all power control, steering, brakes, and to make matters worse I couldn't get the stupid tranny out of first. Nothing like sliding backwards and slightly sideways, down a REALLY steep hill, only to hit bottom and bust the rear bumper all up, in a 40K dollar daily driver.

My 2 cents....

My bro has an auto in his cherokee of course with the 6cyl...

Problem is, with 33's he gets like 6 mpg... He's always complaining... It has stock gearing cuz he's too poor to regear the stupid thing... I drove it about a week ago and whoa, that thing is gutless... Going on the freeway the RPM's are right at 3k just to keep it going with the flow (about 65 - 70) Now in my Jeep... with the 6cyl the manual and stock gearing as well with 33's... I can push 80 on the freeway (i know I know, I'm gonna kill myslef! :D I'm not gonna tell ya about the time I hit 100 (or more, i dunno  )) and my RPM's are only at about 2500. That's what I love about 5th gear!

Now to the 4 wheeling part of my 2 cents... I like how he can go pretty slow up hills and not worry about rolling back on hills with the clutch... That's the nice part of the auto... But then again, going down hills even when he puts it in 1st it still seems to shift through all the gears and go faster, so he has to use his brakes and cannot rely on the engine's compression to slow him down.

In my Jeep I hate hills, sometimes thats my worst fear, but sometimes I don't worry about it and just start it with the clutch engaged in 1st gear and give a little gas. I love how going down hills (even with stock gearing) I just crawl and usually don't need to use my brakes... I love that how the engine just slows you down. But, I hate trying to shift down big hills because when I put it in Neutral (clutch in) it seems like I have to slam on the brakes to keep going as slow as I was.

I think for rockcrawling auto transmissions are better. If you say it takes the challenge out of it than you are not driving difficult enough terrain. To drive the most difficult terrain I want every possible advantage, and an automatic transmission is one of those advantages. Mike, if your bro's tranny is shifting through the gears while it's in first there is something very wrong with it. I use my engine for compression braking with my tranny going down hills, works great. Of course, I'm not running stock gears in the axles or the t-case. With all this said, I think you should stick with a manual, and lower t-case gears, and lower axle gears with your 4 cylinder. I think an automatic may just rob too much power.

Automatics RULE!;)

I dunno about automatics "Ruling" but they make things easier.

The gentleman with the roasted auto on constrictor might have something to say about it ruling because all our manual tranny having butts were busy tugging his broke auto out all day long....when an auto tranny goes....THERE IS NO LIMPING HOME!!

that being said, my next project will probably have an auto tranny because that is what is already bolted to the motor.

Pokey atlas is spendy at 2000 but a 4to 1 is less 1000 which one would you like.
That's what I would do first
a stickshift,four cyl,and 4 to1 go together like a hobo and ham sandwich..

I've never had a problem with my Auto (granted it has only been in for a few months), but I broke three AX15 manuals, before seeing the light and UPGRADING to an auto. Don't pretend that auto's are delicate and manuals are unbreakable. It's great not to have to worry about burnt clutches and leaking slave cylinders too.

I just put 5.13's in the YJ, no 4 to 1, and it is loooow! Much more control. I don't think I need the 4 to 1 now.

Auto's are great going up, but I am more afraid of going down so I will stick with manuals.

One of the problems with the Cherokee tranny (some of them anyway) is that there is not an option to select only 1st gear. Their shifting pattern is :
P
R
N
D
3
1-2

this means that when you put the shifter in '1-2', the tranny will shift from 1 to 2 when it wants to.

with my wrangler, I have the following pattern:
P
R
N
D
3
2
1

With this, I can shift into 1st, it will stay in 1st, and I can get all possible compression braking. I have no problem going down hills in 1st without the brakes. I also have no problem, when climbing an obstacle, of the tranny shifting when I least want it to. I put it in 1st, it stays in 1st.

I like my auto tranny. Definately you need to put plenty of cooling power to it though!! A deep tranny pan helps a lot as well.
