ok guys I took my 2001 XJ sport engine, tranny and t-case and put it in my 98 XJ classic... as well as lift, extended wheelbase and all sorts of stuff... I had to retro fit the 01 to a 98 with old emissions and distributor so the computer would talk to the rest of the Jeep.. (Dealership spent all day trying to make the 01 stuff run and it wouldn't even with all 01 wiring and PCM, so i had to retro fit... come to find out it was missing modules in the tranny...) Dealerships suck man... I have no exp and I fixed the tranny on my own after they told me it couldn't be done but whatever...

NOW... I have it all working except the idle is screwed and making my check engine light flash... and I have no 4th gear and no start off or speed up power like it should.. but I think I forgot a bolt on the actual solenoid... maybe not tho anyways the codes said it could be 02 sensor or low or high fuel pressure / pump? <---( just replaced from 01).. auto zone said fuel pressure regulator... (which i can't see that I have?) so I'm really confused each part is like 100 bucks minimum so I don't wanna start guessing and waste $$. Now I removed the CAT and just put the downstream o2 sensor in front of the muffler but I find it hard to believe that would screw my idle... it's so bad it dies after 15-20 seconds.. also... the timing when I get TDC and the compression stroke doesn't work.. I have to offset the wires 1 position clockwise to start it.. so I may have multiple issues but only 1 code coming up... Also I swapped the vacuum lines out and back in from 01-98 so maybe got a crack? or leak but can't find it so I doubt that's it.

SO ANYWAYS... i live in SLC I either need to know how and what to fix or who I can take it to and have it fine tuned and fixed without it costing me an arm and a leg... ANY THOUGHTS? plz? thanks! :greg:

I'm almost ready to go to Teraflex down the road from my house but man everytime I go there I loose my life savings!! lol and really I know it's prolly something simple and silly that I can do but I need it diagnosed correctly...

They're the men. They fixed a problem in my Jeep that was haunting me for a year that no one else was able to diagnose (dealer said it was "normal"). Ten mins in the shop and I was down the road trouble-free.
If you're looking for cheap, there's lots of dudes hanging out in the Home Depot parking lot off 2100S.

ya I kinda figured.... anyone there I should talk to specifically? I used to know an older guy there who took good care of me and hooked me up but he's not up front anymore...

so Teraflex said 2 weeks at the soonest... sounds like they don't wanna do it lol so any other ideas? I'm seriously leaning toward o2 sensor with how it's acting but I cut my cat out and am not sure how well those O2 bypass plugs will work and if it will solve my issue

K well that makes sense the way its running but why... the timing vacuum or sensors? Vacuum I can check with ether right? But the timing and distributor only starts when its firing order is one back counter clockwise on the distributor from where #1 lines up with the TDC on comp. Stroke. Now I am using an 01 csp sensor so I can swap that and try but why is my timing having to be all wack? That would cause a misfire...

misfires can be a number of things. i just fixed my dad's and his was a dead plug. start simple and work up from there. is it just one cylinder or multiple?

well the code doesn't say there is a specific one... I mean I can do all new plugs I have a whole new set but wires are new.. engine ran sweet before I retro fitted it to distributor and tried to do timing. (the distributor was fine before I swapped it to the new block too) but I also pulled vacuum lines and had to switch intake and exhaust manifold and new exhaust pipes - the cat. conv. in order to match up with the 98 PCM.. cuz the new engine came out of my 01.. with all 01 stuff it purred like a cat but wouldn't shift cuz of 01 PCM and intake differences.. so I retro fitted and now can't get it tuned in properly...

are you sure you got the distributor in correctly? seems odd you have to back the wires off one spot. I think the distributor would need to be line up correctly so that the fuel injectors will fire at the right time from the crank position sensor, so if your distributor is off it will fire before the injectors open for the fuel which will cause it to not burn completely so the oxygen sensor will say it's rich so it will lean out and die. just a thought I'd double check your timing on the distributor. hope this helps

X3 on the distributor backwards, that is how it would run for sure check that and like others said check all the other basic stuff

Thanks guys! im replacing the air flow module on the TB and the 02 sensor since I have extras... the distributor was in the right position on the compression stroke but I only got it to fire up once so maybe once I replace the idle air module and 02 sensor it will work in the right position... my only issue is I don't really understand the timing thing... some people say I need to rotate 10-11 degrees to compensate for altitude? and last question.. would a missing cat.. (only one was on my system) make it run like crap? should I put a cat back on it?

Hey would the fact that this is a 2001 engine set up for an ignition coil rail change anything? cuz it all seems to be right but still no workie... this firing order and timing has to be jacked...
