MFFW recover abandoned Blazer on Kane Creek!

Someone, (the BLM knows who and are hopefully gonna get 'em) abandoned a full sized Chevy Blazer on the Kane Creek 4x4 trail in Moab sometime in late May or early June. For those of you familiar with the trail, the rig was about 2.7 miles from the end just above where the 4X4 road separates from an ATV trail and begins to climb up the cliff side, just before the biggest obstacle on the trail.

The vehicle came to the Moab Friends For Wheelin's attention in June and plans were made to try and get this POS off the trail. This is a pollutant, an eye sore, and sets more bad precedent for wheelers junking up nature. So, since we love the trails, we're gonna take a day off from wheeling to clean it up.

As you can see by the photo, the tires and wheels were harvested from the truck as well as some engine parts. When we first noticed it in June, it was balanced nicely on stacks of rocks. Now, upon our return, it looks like somebody was bored on the trail and thought about dumping it over the cliff. Also, the trail was covered with glass fragments where people broke out all the windows. Sheesh, what is wrong with people?

We had previously measured the lugs and enough folks had the six lug pattern on their wheels to use spares (except for Susan, who donated two of hers which left her Sami at home on a floor jack). We put the wheels on the upside first.

Then, using a strap and a winch line around a large rock, we pulled the Blazer upright to stabilize it and get a jack under it. See all the glass by the rear of the truck?

Here comes the next set of tires. Good thing this truck can take 37"s. Once we got those on, we had to break the steering since they weren't thoughtful enough to leave behind the keys. And, we also had to remove the rear driveshaft as we couldn't get the t-case into neutral.

Now, we had a free wheeling, several thousand pound vehicle with no engine, no brakes, and no power steering on a cliff road. So, who do you find that's willing to drive such a beast?

Why, yours truly of course. I felt like a dog sled driver looking through the broken windshield and seeing my towing group made up of two Samurais and a Jeep. I had a Jeep behind me for a brake too.

This was the quietest rig I've ever "driven". After a near miss going over the cliff side and a few heated exchanges of words when my bright blue stinger made contact with the Sami in front of me, we made it to 191.

Larry went back into Moab and exchanged his Jeep for a truck and trailer. We loaded the beast and took it back to Jeff's house where it's become a lawn decoration for now. Sorry, Susan, we'll get rid of it soon.

Thanks so much for getting that POS off the trail. I wish you knew who it belonged to so you could park it on it's side in their living room.
